Towels with Hanging Loops

Suki2 · 19/01/2015 09:52

Help please! DS needs some bath towels for his boarding school, and they've specified they need to have hanging loops. I can't find any; just found some super expensive ones in the USA; I don't want to spend too much. I'd be grateful for any ideas!

sew some cord or tape on? name tape?

AnnoyingOrange · 19/01/2015 09:53

Sew a loop of tape or ribbon onto them

SoupDragon · 19/01/2015 09:54

Ikea ones have hanging loops I think. Or at least a label that functions as a hanging loop

Theas18 · 19/01/2015 09:54

Umm sew one on!

SoupDragon · 19/01/2015 09:55

I have just looked and yes, the Ikea ones I have have an actual hanging loop.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2015 09:56

Not everyone has a sewing machine.
Not everyone can sew.
Not everyone's hand sewing is robust enough to survive.

AuntieStella · 19/01/2015 10:37

OP did ask for 'any ideas', not just where they can be bought.

So I suggest sewing loops on to towels you already have. And if you don't sew, take them to a dry cleaners which does repairs/alterations. I think they'll need to be machine sewn for strength.

(in extremis, just cut a hole in one corner of the towel)

SavoyCabbage · 19/01/2015 10:40

Suki, look for something you can use as a hanging loop like ribbon, tape, cotton flat shoe laces, name tapes.

Then thread a needle with about 40cm of thread. Make both sides the same length. So the needle is in the middle.

Hold the tape where you want it or use a pin if you have one to keep it in place.

Then sew through the towel and the tape, making a stitch about 5mm long. Then do at least 5 more stitches the same all on top of one another. Done.

If he's going to boarding school everything will need to be labelled. Buy a pack of sturdy (maybe slightly wider than standard) name tapes. Cut off a length of two names and sew onto the middle of the long side of each towel. Stitch ends of tape to towel edge in an X shape with square border round that. You don't need a machine. Bomb proof. And use old towels you already have. Knowing teenage boys as I do, odds are they won't always use the loops...the towels will end up on the floor a lot of the time so new ones are a waste. [ wink]

Obviously I could sew them on, but think I would worry about them falling off again!
Thanks for the Ikea suggestion, Soup Dragon. I wonder if the lakeland clip ons would be robust enough , Annoying Orange? I may give them a try.
I agree, AuntieStella, they would need to be machined on; I may look for somewhere that does small alterations, thanks for the suggestion.
Hanging loops are so obviously useful I find it strange that they aren't readily available; (
Ikea isn't near me).

a well sewn on label is not coming off any time soon.

bring them round here I'll sew them on.

Ask around if anyone sews, offer a large delicious chocolate cake in exchange for sewn on loops

myotherusernameisbetter · 19/01/2015 18:54

H&M shower towels are good and have a decent hanging loop on both short ends and can be bought on mail order if you are not near an ikea.

Superlovely · 19/01/2015 18:57

I use elastic, the stretchiness stops it being pulled off IYSWIM.

derektheladyhamster · 19/01/2015 18:59

I work in a boarding school. The best idea is the name labels sewed as a loop (2 or 3 names in a loop)

Saves you having to name the towel as well Grin

NorbertDentressangle · 19/01/2015 19:08

Yep, Soupy is right - Ikea's the place as they have hanging loops.

We have some fantastic towels from there that we've had for years and they still look great.

bryte · 19/01/2015 23:07

If the towels you buy have a label near the edge, you could put a piece of cord through the middle (needs to be a doubled over style label, not sewn flat type) and tie the cord in a knot, leaving a loop. I've done that for towels in my house.

Suki2 · 20/01/2015 05:55

Thanks for so many ideas! derektheladyhamster I think the idea of a few name labels sewed as a loop is a great one!
