Hi my daughter is in year 7 and the school are holding auditions for the annual school production on Monday ( they were told on Friday ) . She has decided today to have a go but needs to prepare a short monologue ( im guessing around 1 minute ) and a section of a song . While she has decided on the song quite easily she is having problems deciding on the monologue part . We have googled and you tubed and she has tried a few out but nothing she feels happy about I think maybe as she is unsure what they expecting . I am really happy she is having a go and if anyone can give us a few pointers/advice we would be really grateful : ) many thanks

What's the production? That is very short notice to prepare something. Obviously those who rehearse frequently and those who have done LAMDA will have pieces up their sleeve, but school productions are meant to be open to all. For year 7 I would keep it simple - one of Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes? A bit longer than a minute, so you could cut it down a bit, or look for a similar poem (assuming that the play is something connected to musical theatre).

If she hasn't auditioned before, then one thing to talk to her about is being ready to accept direction. The person running the audition may ask her to restart in a different manner (eg tell the story as a tragedy rather than a comedy or vice versa). She shouldn't feel that she has got it wrong - they're just testing to see if she can follow instructions.

What does she like? Comedy or straight prices? I agree with previous poster, a comedy poem will work well and be ready to remember at short notice. Any kind of poem will work well.

Although I doubt (if it's a state school) they will ask her to change the shape of the piece, dramatically and on the spot. She might be given slight direction ie asked to speak up.

Dd has a file of sorry monologues acme poems here if you are still looking and I'll gladly type one up for you.

Hi sorry my internet has been playing up so only just seen both of your messages . Thank you both that's helpful advice - she has chosen a short dramatic piece that she feels happy with and we have done a bit of role play / different scenarios so she feels ready for anything they throw at her ! Its a state school production and open for all so should be ok . She did audition at her last school for the year 6 play but they all got given a set piece for that so think it was the fact she had to choose something that initially threw her and the fact its secondary school and all still a bit unknown ! Thanks again for taking time to reply it was much appreciated x
