I just thought I'd get us started up again!

Soton accommodation applications open today but DS's registration isn't being recognised.
Accomm office have said the info hasn't been uploaded yet so to keep trying!

He's desperate to book it, lol! Grin

bobs123 · 02/02/2015 17:32

Horsemad is it first come first served at Soton and does it get booked up quickly? Any suggestions as to which halls?

Soton is likely to be DD's firm but she has Newcastle to see on Wednesday before deciding

bobs123 · 02/02/2015 17:56

Question on student finance...I have already supported DD1's application at uni for the last couple of years. Do I get new log in details for DD2?

Horsemad · 02/02/2015 18:04

Hi bobs123
I remember the accommodation talk from the open day and they stressed that it is NOT allocated on a first come first served basis.

No idea how quickly they get booked up, sorry.
DS is putting the two newest halls City Gateway and Mayflower and one other, prob Glen Eyre. I don't know how many choices they have to put, will update when he gets onto the site. Smile

circular · 02/02/2015 19:46

Thanks for that Bobs123 will pass onto DD.

Horsemad re the new halls at Soton, did you get to see them on open day? DD really liked Glen Eyres, and there and Wessex Lane are quite a bit cheaper.

Horsemad · 02/02/2015 20:07

Circular - no, sadly neither of the new halls were available to view at the time.
I actually liked Soton campus and halls the least of all the unis we viewed (all 12! of them).

There weren't many catered halls and the prices were on a par with much nicer accommodation I'd seen at other unis.

Horsemad · 02/02/2015 20:16

I'm watching University Challenge - Durham trailing Gonville and Caius - Cambridge.

circular · 02/02/2015 20:44

Horsemad 12!!!!!!
We notched up 9, (which included 2 Conservatoires) and 2 of those were campus tours only. I thought that was bad enough. And still doing 3 applicant days.
Is it catered halls your DS is looking for?
Seems most of th catered need to be vacated at Easter and/or Xmas. Whilst DD likely to come home, good to have the option not to, or at least leave stuff there.

DS not bothered re catered v self catered really. I thought catered would be better for him - a complete novice in the kitchen and unwilling to learn!

Yes, maybe self catered better, then no need to vacate at holidays. Don't fancy trailing down to Soton at hols only to take everything back a few weeks later! Grin

bobs123 · 02/02/2015 22:31

From where I live I've told DD I will drive down at the beginning of yr 1 and not expect to have to drive there again till the end of yr 2 when she will do a year abroad.
I seem the remember after talking to a student there that after the year in halls, renting in private houses actually starts as soon as the year before finishes and lasts for a year, so they can actually move their stuff straight from halls to their next accommodation - apparently have to get the timing right though
Probably Glen Eyre or Wessex for DD due to cost. Highfield is closest but is catered

bobs123 · 02/02/2015 22:34

sorry...thanks for that Horsemad Smile

Oh and yes we watch University Challenge every week. DD gets quite excited when she gets one right - in particular the sciences which she didn't enjoy!

Horsemad · 03/02/2015 00:25

Most students going into shared houses for their 2nd yr are paying deposits to reserve their new place by Dec of their first yr! Shock
That's not much time to find people you might want to share with, is it?! Or maybe that's me being picky?! DH is on about buying a house for DS down there Shock I just nod and smile and let him do the planning!

bluebellz · 03/02/2015 08:48

doing applicant days and it is starting to feel very real. We have to wait until March for Surrey which is inconvenient as he wants to choose sooner.

Feel excited for him - an adventure. I just about remember first year at uni!! :)

Horsemad · 03/02/2015 09:19

Is it bad that last night I was thinking 'hmm, in 2.5 years DS2 will hopefully be at uni and I can eat semolina out of the tin for tea when DH is on nights and it's just me here?' !!!

Shock
bobs123 · 03/02/2015 11:01

No, not bad Horsemad. I'm thinking how much cheaper the bills will be! But then I'll probably have DD1 back at home then.

With DD1 she picked her 2nd year accommodation about half way through the first year. For her 3rd year they decided in December of 2nd year. Not sure DD2 how they do it after spending 3rd year abroad Confused

circular · 03/02/2015 17:03

Bluebelz Last applicant day late March here too, couldn't make earlier one. Secretly hoping DD will drop that one and choose from others earlier.

Horsemad · 03/02/2015 17:48

I felt like that too, circular as DS was scheduled to attend a visit day at Warwick on 28 Feb.
I do feel a sense of 'Thank God that's all over with' now he's firmed!

Decorhate · 03/02/2015 19:02

Horsemad, I am already planning that next year h & I will eat our main meals at work during the week so I only need to cook for the boys (who rarely want what we have so usually do 2 dinners)

Horsemad · 03/02/2015 21:04

Good move Decorhate Smile

hellsbells99 · 04/02/2015 06:59

We only have 1 applicant day in half term then DD1 can make her choices......and the we start all over again with DD2 who is in year 12!

bluebellz · 05/02/2015 19:47

oh dear - I missed that you can't do student finance until you make your choices. Most annoying one uni has a March applicant day that we probably won't choose.

Want him to get on with it all.

Finally had a fab offer from a good uni - after interview.

Littleham · 05/02/2015 20:01

Fabulous news bluebellz.

My daughter has two offer days in February and one in March (but luckily only half a day off school). Then decision time!

bluebellz · 05/02/2015 20:15

thank you littleham

okay - lots of people need to wait until March. Feel better now.
