At Dcs school over 300 out of 800 Dc come down sick within 2 days.Feeling sick watery eyes , then high fever and a cough - pretty typical flu.
Public health(I think that's who they are?) have sent a team in to investigate.
Can anyone put my mind at rest that this is standard procedure ?

Yes absolutely standard for that amount of people. I expect the school are being pro active.

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 16/12/2014 11:54

Sounds like the lurgy that's going round lots of places (my office has had lots of cases (in London) and I know several people who have also had it where I live (SW). I'm just getting over it, my kids and husband all had it last week. It's vile but short lived. Which might be some consolation?

lljkk · 16/12/2014 12:54

Totally normal, probably overkill too, but it's the age we live in. Imagine this happens 100 times a year among all UK schools, and in just one of those schools is there an active infectious agent. But they didn't investigate and detect early on; how much criticism would get heaped on public health bods? They can't win, have to waste a lot of money investigating nothing events.

LindaJill · 16/12/2014 13:03

Yes it's normal. For every 100 DC who will feel poorly then perk up, there will be one or two vulnerable DC or people in the community who are having chemo/ immuno suppressed/frail elderly etc. for these people it needs identifying and a getting a containment plan/ treatment in place, or local health services will be overwhelmed. It's just part of good planning and response.

Yes, I had the flu jab a few weeks ago, hasn't stopped me getting this. It doesn't last long though (I'm already on the mend).

LooseAtTheSeams · 16/12/2014 16:09

Yes, thought DS2 had escaped the worst owing to flu jab but no! Managed to give it to me, too. Must admit after sneaking back to bed to sleep for an hour while he languished on the sofa, I felt a lot better. DS2 insists he is fine and not as poorly as mummy but he hasn't got the energy to eat much or leave the sofa so I think he's being unnecessarily brave. Most of his class have been felled by this bug and I think it's doing the rounds of our local schools.

RabbitOfNegativeEuphoria · 16/12/2014 16:23

I think if you can sleep that's the best thing, but the coughing makes it tricky. I feel fine now except I can't actually stand up or walk - weak as a baby. I'm sure I'll be properly better tomorrow though. Best thing is to keep hydrated - last night when I went all funny I'm sure it was because I hadn't had much to drink.

LooseAtTheSeams · 16/12/2014 16:59

Sleep is the Holy Grail in these cases, the cough is a real pain. I hope you feel much, much better tomorrow, Rabbit and everyone else stricken with this.
