It depends.

At the school my DDs go to, detention is a serious sanction, used for serious misdemeanours. I'm happy with that.

No. Makes me feel like crying when people talk about letting their children suffer the consequences of their actions at school. Schools have no consequences to impose. Detentions for most of the repeat offenders hold no fear, there's no shame attached. They are a minor inconvenience.

Depends, at our school they seem to hand them out like smarties, which obv lessens the effect.
