Funny business or am I being paranoid?

Using a throwaway account as I don't want to look crazy. I feel very uncomfortable about a developing situation re school admissions and just need someone to tell me that I'm being paranoid.

I think we're all aware of some very competitive schools out there. My child and only a couple of others from their school entered the competitive entry exams for a local top tier school. One of the children entered was a complete surprise as they have never shown any brilliance and are on the middle table for English and Maths in a standard school.

The first thing that got me intrigued was the child mentioned to mine that they already knew some of the questions for the test as they knew the *** at the school. An odd comment that was quickly retracted.

We then bumped into the child on the way to the exam where over a thousand were sitting the test. The child asked which assembly area my child was going to and knew that they would be sitting the test in a certain room in the school. This also gave me an odd feeling especially as their parent looked embarrassed and told their child to be quiet. As far as I'm concerned this confirmed that they had access to certain insider information

Anyway, fast forward a few weeks and some preliminary results have been released. My child has done well but I know a few other kids who are no longer in the process who I would have expected to outperform this child (by some margin). I was VERY surprised that this kid has also received a favourable result.

I hope you can tell this isn't sour grapes as my child has done well and I genuinely have no opinion on this other kid. Does this add up to suspicious activity or am I getting my knickers in a twist about nothing?

It sounds fishy to me.

It does sound fishy.

Not sure what you can actually do though?

When you say "one of the children entered was a surprise" what do you mean? Who chooses who gets entered?

Bunbaker · 13/10/2014 19:18

I wouldn't worry about it because if the child isn't academic he/she will struggle in school anyway and it will get picked up.

Has the parent made a huge donation to the school recently?

State or private grammar? If state I would be v surprised if any funny business- round here it is v secure. Quite a lot of children hide their ability at school and grammar results do throw up surprises.
