Our DS has done really well. He took 4 exams in total (I know it sounds a bit excessive) and has got into the top 3% of all of them, guaranteeing a place in all should we apply for them. We are so happy.

Hope your little ones had a good day too.

Some helpful tips to the future eleven plus parents:

  • Start your preparation early but don't over do it.
  • Make practicing for the exam fun.
  • Do your research in advance and focus preparing for the particular school you are after.
  • The effort you put in is not good just for 11+ but gets your kid well geared for secondary education. (Comprehension, Vocabulary, Maths and VR will all see massive improvement).
  • Recommended Books:
- Bond Series - Peter Robson (Maths) - Mastering 11+ - CGP (CEM papers)
  • Don't forget to do one or two mock exams a good couple of weeks before the real one.

All the best.

Well done to your ds.
I agree about making it fun.
I used to teach my dd vocab by acting the words,

Well done to your DS. Grammar results at schools near me are not due out for at least another week.

Well done to ops mini person!

Just make sure that you understand the results you are getting and how they apply in your setting. Locally raw scores and last years " pass mark" ie the score at and above which places were awarded.

However we are a superselective area so that " pass" mark depends a lot of how bright the cohort is and where you sit in it. You have to think hard about deciding not to apply after a " fail" that is quite near as the pass mark may change, and also, of course you can't rest on your " sure" place incase the mark goes up.

Also individual schools hold places back at the " pass mark" for pupil premium candidates now too..

AND (how many confounding factors can there be?!) last year there was a huge expansion of grammar places ( most schools had and extra form) so the pass mark shot down. Will it stay there? Dunno.

Good luck to all.

Remember big up the alternatives too, or at least have an alternative strategy. It isn't all sorted and your kids need to know this isn't a " pass /fail" really it is " finding the best fit school for them" (lets not argue about that , your kids still need to know that the alternatives are viable incase they do end up there_)

Definitely agree to 'bigging up' your alternatives. A friend's DS heard his father saying of a particular school, "Over my dead body will my son go to that school!"! Guess where was the only place available to their son?!

He ended up being very happy there, and has now gone to a RG university :)

(lets not argue about that , your kids still need to know that the alternatives are viable incase they do end up there_)

Some parents with selective eligible children even choose the alternatives, rather than just "end up there".

A decent, high quality education at a non-grammar? Who knew! ;-)

Good point, notinaminute!
