Would just like a view on costs please? It's £25 per hour for a chemistry tutor here, does that sound about right?

We are looking at a Maths one and It's £20 an hour so I would say that's about right.

Behoove · 07/10/2014 12:36

Thanks Sparkling.
It's not easy is it?

It depends where you are. Tutors where I live are £25 per hour on average but in the SE I have heard of tutors costing up to £50ph.

ChillySundays · 07/10/2014 13:22

Sounds about right. Strongly advise that you ask around for a recommendation.

My DD had math tuition. Her tutor was via a recommendation and it was half the going rate (this was for groups of 2/3 and 1 to 1 was less than £20). Because of rate I probably wouldn't have gone there - would have been suspicious.
I have since recommended him and my friends have always been pleased

But don't forget to voice your dissatisfaction with the school first.

weegiemum · 07/10/2014 13:27

I tutor Geography and I'm £28 an hour.

Scotland.

Behoove · 07/10/2014 13:51

Also Scotland.

Hakluyt, I know what you are saying. We live in East Ren and I don't think I'd be unfair to say that my DSs very high achieving school prioritise the high achievers to maintain its reputation. I'm sure all the teaching is to standard but there is undoubtably a focus on the top stream.
I'm told that last week all the children who are predicted to get 5 As were taken out of classes by the HT for special pep talks and guidance leaving the Bs and Cs sitting like plums. I think this is wrong and should have been across the board for all those sitting five Highers as that's an achievement in itself IMO.

Totally agree LaQueen. I must be getting old but I think there's so much pressure in our young people these days so every little helps.

We have got a word of mouth recommendation. Going to ring to get started this week, been waiting to get our hands on the Mock paper from June to give her a heads up. DS is quite excited about it. Confused

Costs usually depend on the level of tuition and who is doing the traveling. Anywhere between £20-35/hr is fairly normal outside London, depending on the level of tuition (primary, KS3, GCSE, A'level, degree level), the qualifications and experience of the tutor (expect to pay more for a qualified teacher/lecturer or graduate with lots of experience and less for a student).

If you are talking A'level, rather than GCSE chemistry for example, £25/hour is a good deal, particularly if the person holds a (good) chemistry degree (and not some pseudo-science degree, such as forensic science, but something actually recognized by the Royal Society of Chemistry) and teaching qualifications or experience.

Large tuition companies will usually charge significantly more than smaller ones, or individuals (but most of the fees will not be passed on to the tutor, who will probably see less than half of what is actually charged). This is understandable of course, as they have much higher overheads, but don't assume the tutor is getting the full fee from large agencies.

DS'a maths tutor has PHD from Oxford is a brilliant mathematician and is one of the few able to tutor for Olympiads etc and he tutors some of the top mathematicians in the country (not DS!). He charges direct clients £100 per hour for the top level tuition because it is very specialised and it takes a lot of preparation beforehand. He only charges £40 per hour for standard secondary maths. We are SW London.

Just wondering if anyone can suggest how to find a tutor in Southwest London for year 10 (GCSE) maths/science and french? DS2 has been diagnosed with poor working memory, attention etc on an Ed psych review so is needing a bit of one to one. Any suggestions of reputable companies or tutors gratefully received as not having much luck through word of mouth, thanks

I would start by starting your own thread here with subjects and area in the title. Someone might advise.

Are his teachers prepared to recommend anyone?

VirtualPointyHat · 09/10/2014 13:37

Bloomin 'eck

Have been tutoring a friends DS for love.
