GCSE English retake

My son obtained a C grade in his English coursework this summer but was unable to actually sit his exam due to glandular fever. He had been predicted to receive a C for English but the exam board gave him a D grade, he therefore 'failed' his exam.
The school have put him in for a resit in November. He had been due to sit a higher grade paper.
He has told me this evening that his school has grouped him in with the other pupils who had failed and they have all been told that due to failing the higher paper they will now all sit a foundation paper. He reminded his teacher that he didn't fail, just wasn't able to sit it. She told him that it didn't matter he will still now sit a foundation paper instead. Should I be concerned with this? My son isn't bothered, just as long as he passes.
I suppose I was hoping he may of gained a B grade if he only had one exam to concentrate on.

Complain.
A resit is the chance to take the paper that was / should have been sat before

I would complain - I think it's particularly unfair for your son who wasn't actually able to sit the exam, and I think kids should be given a chance to aim for the best grades they can get. There might be kids in the group who are happy to sit a foundation paper, but others might need some pushing to do better.
