analysing kent test scores

Hello

We live in London and are considering a move to Kent, my DD has just receive her Kent test score (surprisingly early). She passed for a grammar school place, but I dont know whether she did well enough to get one of the (very few) places for out of kent people. is there a guide as to what sort of score is needed in this years test for a place at tonbridge grammar.

but even "passing" won't guarantee a place, especially out of area.

Taffeta · 03/10/2014 18:53

Indeed I guess what op needs to know is how many got top/high scores, which no one will know until after 15th Oct.

pushydaddy · 04/10/2014 11:31

Hi all

Thanks for your help in understanding this.

In conclusion, the tests have been standardardised by cohort, so it is likely that the entrance grades for schools like TOGs wont have changed much year on year. So a score below 400 has no realistic hope of getting into TOGs. Which is is a shame, but I am sure that DD will learn from this and keep on practising for her other entrance exam.

It will be interesting to see if our results are a statistical anomaly or if many children have a significantly lower Maths result.

The standardisation isn't quite as black and white as that and the number of top scorers varies by year. Last year the number of children scoring 423 was about a third of the previous year, and off the top of my head scores for the Judd were a lot lower than usual - I think 407 would have got a place.

As I'm sure you've realised, the marks haven't come out yet to parents and strictly schools shouldn't share them. If you Google Kent Advice Schools you should find a website where the owner will put in FOI requests regarding the scores after the results are out.

Tanaqui · 04/10/2014 13:28

Yes- there can be huge variation- see my comment above. If scores are as low as I have seen suggested elsewhere, nearly 400 may well be enough.

What is 420 like 100%?
We are doing out of area application for TGS for 2016 entry, we live in London. How much higher is the out of area score requirement than the in area requirement? We could move but I don't really want to

Taffeta · 04/10/2014 19:38

420/421 is traditionally top score, it is not 100%.

Out of area for TOGs last year was 404, in area was 401.

MadameLeBean · 04/10/2014 19:40

Great, thanks. There are about 30 places for out of area vs 120 ish for in area right?

KittyandTeal · 04/10/2014 19:51

The kent test pass score seems to be lower this year than past years.

We've had our results a week or so. Parents don't know yet, it's so hard talking to kids about schools they're visiting knowing that they've passed and looking at non grammars is pointless now.

MadameLeBean · 04/10/2014 19:56

Can someone please explain why the schools get the scores earlier but are not allowed to tell the parents?

About 3% go through on appeal- this is a designed part of the test (usually 21% pass test, 3% on ht appeal), to compensate slightly for the "one off day" effect. If this years scores are dramatically lower, the auperselective marks will be too- it is highly improbable that there are loads of 410+ If a pass is 320ish.

Historically 141 in each paper is about 75% raw score depending on paper/ year/ age.

Hakluyt · 05/10/2014 11:38

"it's so hard talking to kids about schools they're visiting knowing that they've passed and looking at non grammars is pointless now."

I would have thought th other way round would be much harder......Hmm

Tanaqui · 08/10/2014 13:56

If the graphs here are anything like a likely projection, I think the superselective marks will go well under 400 so don't lose hope!

Looks like TOGs will be about 385 out of area- does that work for you?!

Tanaqui · 30/10/2014 21:55

I have seen that KCC have put up the scores from each primary school. It is downloadable from their website.

I know this is an old thread but wanted to share some thoughts. Had to go through this a couple of years ago for my youngest and now my daughter will be applying.

First time around it always seemed obvious to me to put the schools in the actual order of preference we wanted as it doesn’t have any bearing on getting a lower preference school if we didn’t qualify for a higher choice school.

Anyhoo, KCC now make things a bit easier by seeing the last couple of years’ scores. KCC have put up some handy spreadsheets:

2016 Kent Test scores report (XLSX, 82.2 KB)

2015 Kent Test scores report (XLS, 144.5 KB)

Also, I know these guys keep on top of the pass rates each year and have helped me out recently with questions: www.how2become.com/testing/kent-test-practice-papers/
