English GCSE remark q. School not responding

Hi,
My son got a C in his AQA english lit GCSE. He was predicted a B. He's dyspraxic and we are pleased with a C but can't help wondering. He also got a C in language- fair enough really after they screwed him over taking out S&L (which he got a 5 in).

Looking at the grade boundaries he was 2ums off a B (he got 138 and a B is 140 I think). I've repeatedly asked school if they think a remark of one of the papers is worth it but they haven't responded. Keep saying will get back to me but never do.

His marks: paper 97102H (poetry I think) are 53/b (where 56 a) so a really high B. Paper 97101H (modern text I think) was 48 which is exactly a C. So obviously the modern text he did badly in. This was one of his first exams and I know even with extra time he didnt finish it. He said at the time he missed out the concluding paragraph of the final question.

Do you think theres any point asking for a remark? Would missing out the last paragraph cost him so many points? Basically making it impossible to score any higher than borderline? He was very confident about what he'd written he just didnt finish.

He is not bothered & and I don't want to risk the mark going down.

Wwyd?

I think the final date for a remark is the 20th. I would be tempted to get the poetry one remarked first if that went well in the hope that the additional marks could be found there.

Then I would get the other one remarked if it hadn't gone up after the first remark but you need to act quickly. I think if he was so close to a B is very unlikely to go to a C.

I am not a teacher. If it was me I wouldn't bother but at the end of the day it is what you feel happy with.

Deadline is 20th so if you do want it remarked suggest you ring school and go tomorrow armed with your chequebook. Don't be fobbed off if you want an remark - as long as you pay you can have a remark. Since it is so near the deadline you may be better paying for both papers just in case.

My DS is 4 marks off a C and I have paid for both papers. To be honest I wouldn't have bothered having it remarked except he did even worse on his language I felt had to try and get a C in literature. If he had passed the language I wouldn't have even been looking at grad boundaries
Hope you update to say what you decide

I would definitely go for a re mark as there has been a right muddle this year with the Eng papers.
For what it's worth we had my dd's eng lang paper re marked and her total score went up 21 UMS! seriously. (B to a good A).
I would go in to school tomorrow if you can and insist on seeing the head of dept or the person with responsibility for public exams as you have only tomorrow left - as chilly says, deadline is 20th.
He or she can also go through the numbers with you properly to ensure there is no risk of going down a grade.
Good luck OP and chilly ...

Nostress definitely go for the remark - hopefully you've still got time. My DD did the same AQA paper and also needed 2 UMS to go up a grade. We had the poetry paper only remarked and she got 5 extra UMS on this paper alone. As others have said the English making generally has been dodgy. We also know someone whose AQA English Lang paper went up 15 ums on the remark.

Finally spoke to school! Hod said if it was her child she would go for it so we have. Fingers crossed! Just the low paper not the whole thing.

Good luck OP. Mind you the wait for the remark is killing me!

TeaAndALemonTart · 20/09/2014 16:57

Our remarks came back really quickly. One within 24hrs and the other within two days. Both with edexcel. Good luck for yours.

nostress · 20/09/2014 18:09

Thanks! How long have you been waiting chilly?

We've heard English could take till half term. Maths was just a few days

nostress · 20/09/2014 18:55

How did your ds get on lizs? I remember you weren't able to secure his extra time. I should imagine that made the whole experience pretty stressful.

Nostress - Took cheque into school on 10 September. The school are having his german (WJEC) papers marked and apparently they went off on 2 September!

LIZS · 20/09/2014 19:36

He did really well thank you, felt timing not a serious issue in the end . English Language (his perceived strength) was 2 marks off A and Maths at top of A/A boundary but remark produced no change.

nostress · 20/09/2014 19:45

Glad to hear that! I don't know where we would of been without the extra time for the essay papers!

School rang today and his eng lit paper has stayed as a D but his other subject has been increased to a C.

Would have preferred for his english to be the one upgraded (especially since that is the one I paid for!) but at least he has an extra GCSE
Are you still waitng OP?

nostress · 26/09/2014 21:02

Oh thats good news! And extra C! Haven't hear yet. Did hear of two mark downs in school today though!

Hopefully you will hear next week. I sent my cheque in about a week before you

Leeds2 · 26/09/2014 22:48

Well done to your son, Chilly. An extra C is well worth it.

ChillySundays · 27/09/2014 12:21

Thanks Leeds!

LIZS · 01/10/2014 10:20

No change to English mark here . I wonder if this was the impact of losing extra time , he may not have felt it at the time having got used to it, but a restriction may not have enabled him to process the question and write to his best.
