Hi, dd started high school last week, she has settled in really well but is exhausted. She has Pe twice a week and has to carry her full Pe kit, shorts ,t shirt, tracksuit, trainers, towel, shin pads, two pairs of socks and gum shield. She also has her school bag with equiptment for four other lessons and both bags together are very heavy for an 11 yr old to be carrying around everywhere all day including lunch time.
We were told they would be given lockers so they would only need to carry both bags for the morning/afternoon depending on when the lesson was but this hasn't happened yet.
Would I be seen as 'that parent' if I rang to ask if they will be getting a locker ?

Milk surely food science ingredients go into storage in the Food Tech room? Students shouldn't be carrying ingredients around all day so get DS to check. Fruit salad ingredients are probably not so important but I wouldn't like to be trying to use cream and butter which had been trailed around school for several hours!

It seems to take weeks to sort out lockers!

DS has a big proper rucksack so that he isn't carrying it all lopsided on one shoulder. And it all fits in the rucksack.

Ds1 was given his locker 2nd day of term.

They are very close to his form room (deliberately allocated in this way)

He dumps his PE kit and any valuables in it, so twice a week for PE he dumps his phone (allowed at school but not to be used in the day) and his watch in his locker first thing before registration. Plus it is where they stash coats as they are not to be worn in school, nor taken into classrooms.

He has PE after break so collects his PE kit at break.

I can't understand how other schools don't get their arses in gear for this. Do they collect in valuables when they are doing PE or just take a chance that no-one will nick anything?

I would also say at this time of year the Year 7's appear to bring in the largest bag of every piece of PE kit they have. By December they have got the idea of what they need and when and the bags do shrink! We are a Sports College and see this happen every year. Some of our year 7's also panic about which books to have so bring all subjects books everyday just in case! Never have a calculator on them though grrrr.

Speak to the Head of Year about lockers.

Our PE department do collect in valuables and lock them away every lesson from students like phones, watches etc so they are not left in changing rooms unsupervised.

Mine never ever used the lockers. Nor were they permitted to hang coats on the backs of chairs Hmm. One more reason for not taking a coat to school.
Around Year8 of DC2 I gave up worrying about it Grin.

I have to say our school admin are great.

Lockers are sorted out my the finance office, as is all trip monies. Stupid questions of all types are answered patiently by reception.

Just as well as DDs old tutor was utterly usless.

Our school won't let them have their lockers until everyone can have access to the lockers - some students loose keys, don't leave them unlocked so they have to sort this out. Nothing has been mentioned yet, it takes around 5-6 weeks! My daughter doesn't both, but they are allowed to leave their pe kits in their Head of Year's room, so if she can't cope ask if anything can be arranged.

Unfortunately, it can be a struggle with so much to carry - my daughter had her heavy bag, pe kit, cookery stuff and violin one day. Luckily another friend only had two things and she helped her in the morning.

icymaiden · 16/09/2014 13:51

Don't they have anywhere to keep things?
My Dc's school has a cloakroom where PE bags are left, musical instruments are stored under the stage and cooking ingredients are stored in a larder

ArtisanBaps · 19/09/2014 01:18

Back in my day I had cookery, PE and violin lesson on same day, and I walked to school. It will be fine.

Be that parent. Ours don't have coathangers or lockers at all, have five floors to race up and down, and end up lugging 6 or 7 kilos of stuff around all day, including the tinies. In winter this load includes a wet coat. It's ridiculous.
