Not happy with remark result - has anyone asked the school to appeal?

DD was one ums under the grade she needs for Uni in one of her A levels (gap year currently and applying now).
One of her papers contained what seemed to be an obvious marking error but it remained the same on the remark. Her other paper has now been submitted for a remark as the teacher found two possible marking errors but less clear cut. Assuming it stays the same she will have to resit both A2 papers.

Assuming I understand this correctly the school can appeal a remark? The mistake seems so obvious I wonder if I can ask them to do so and whether anyone has experience of this?

The error concerned a response to a question that was worded differently to the marking key but in her teachers opinion it is the right answer.

The school can appeal, have you asked them to do it for you?

Hpparent · 13/09/2014 08:45

No not yet. Still waiting for the result of the second paper's remark. Depending on that I will ask the school to appeal.

I think there is a time-limit for Appeals OP
From the Edexcel website "If you're still not satisfied after a review of marking, you can ask your centre to appeal on your behalf. Appeals do not normally involve marking your work a second time, but work will be marked once again if there is evidence that the correct procedure wasn’t followed in the original review of marking.
Your centre has 14 days after receiving the outcome of your review of marking to appeal. We can't process appeal requests after this deadline.
You can find out more about the appeals process on the JCQ website."

Yes, I read that. I wasn't previously aware that it was an option which is why I posted as I thought there were no further action possible after a remark.

I am furious as I think the question was wrongly marked in the first place and I find it difficult to believe that it was looked at a second time with the same outcome. If it was wrong I think the exam board need to explain why it was a wrong answer as DD's teacher thinks it was correct.

I don't know if the school are willing to do it but it is worth a shot. I imagine we would have to pay for the appeal but hey we have already paid for 2 remarks at £45 a shot.

DD is going into school on Monday. Hopefully the second remarked paper will be back by then, fingers crossed that it will have gone up and none of this will be necessary.

You can appeal on the basis of procedural error only I thought?

I did once and the appeal was successful, but the error was so absurd that our HT referred the case up to the Sec of State. I honestly don't know what can be done if you simply don't agree that the original marking of a question was correct, or the subsequent marking too, because that isn't procedural.

Well it is if they haven't followed their own procedures..

Do you have the evidence to show that they haven't followed their own procedures Hp?

Hpparent · 15/09/2014 09:07

I believe so, yes

In that case there's no problem and the school will back your appeal. Just watch the deadline though, as a previous poster has said. Of course the other paper due back today might make the angst redundant! Good luck with it all - one mark away from a much needed grade is extremely tough.

Hpparent · 15/09/2014 14:02

Whew, mark went up by 4 ums so got the A thankfully! Thank you Molio and other posters for your comments!

No problem. Very glad it turned out well :)

Yay, that's fantastic. Well done to your DD.
