2014 GCSE remark query

School has suggested getting a remark done because DD was a couple of marks off an A. Reading through previous threads on this topic jw if I've understood things: eg can I request a photocopy of the paper via the school exam office first and then ask for a remark?

Anyone know how much a photocopy or a remark costs or does it depend on exam board?

I'm aware a remark can go up or down. Thanks for any help with this

Not sure if all boards/subjects are the same but my understanding for GCSE is that you can't ask for a remark after you see the paper. You can ask for a remark and a copy at the same time, but not after you get a copy of the paper. If DD was only a couple of marks of an A it is unlikely that a move down would cost her the grade - may as well go for it. Not sure about cost but should be easy to look up on the exam board website.

You can have a photocopy of the paper, then ask for a remark. You can't ask for the original back, then ask for a remark though - for obvious reasons.

If she was close just put in for the remark - cost is around £30 or so.

There wouldn't be time to see a photocopy before making the decision OP, the deadline for re-marks is next week.

If the school have suggested the remark I would expect them to pay for the remark. My DS one mark off a C for one subject and the school are .paying. Other subject is four marks off and I am paying for two papers at a cost of £65

Not sure if anyone is able to provide some guidance on remarks for AQA Geography coursework. K had her coursework marked at school and was awarded a provisional A. The school subsequent to this lost her coursework and asked her to redo the work a week prior to the start of her GCSE's. I called up and explained that there is no way that she could fit the work in that they required and they were happy for her to access the system at school and reprint her work but not hand in any of the hand written/drawn work ie maps etc. School said they would explain to exam board. Come results day K received a C for the coursework. Needless to say this dropped her predicted A grade to a B. Asked the school to look into this on the same day. After various e-mails and prompts to follow up on progress and e-mails from the school being non committal and saying it is being discussed with the HT I today received and e-mail from the deputy HT apologising for 'issues' surrounding the Geog results and a squeeze on CA's resulting in a severe down moderation of the whole cohort. Apparently the school was provided with an explanation that led them to believe that it was futile to appeal the results. Therefore they are afraid the result will remain as is and apologise for the distress it has caused the young person. I am fuming as I feel like I have been fobbed off. They never appealed as requested, they never responded with anything apart from "it is with the head teacher", "apologies but this can take a few weeks" and now it is a closed door, not even from the Geog teacher or the headteacher but the deputy head. I have been given no explanation and no reason. Surely no experienced teacher's marking can be that far off. A* to C - bit strange I think? Either the wrong course work assignment? The criteria given incorrectly? or the explanation not done. I am sure a number of other girls also had their's marked down severely. Whereto now? Does anyone have any advice as to how one proceeds with this?

AdeH the situation about remarks is different for controlled assessments as requests would affect the whole year group rather than just one pupil.
It may be possible to check directly with the exam board that your dd was given proper consideration for lost coursework and that the school submitted the correct paperwork see link www.aqa.org.uk/exams-administration/coursework-and-controlled-assessment/lost-coursework. If part of the CA was missing, that could be why the mark was lowered so much.

Thanks, I will try this route. I have again today e-mailed the school but not received a response back. The school assured K and myself that them losing the CA would not have any impact on her mark. Let's hope for the best as she spent enough hours staying after school to complete the work and the teacher must have felt that the work was worth the mark. I know there has been a squeeze on the marking but this does seem a bit extreme.
