How much homework in Year 11?

DS just gone back to school this week. I appreciate that this is his GCSE year but he's had 3 hours + of homework every evening, which seem a bit excessive. He's worried (as am I) that he won't have time for anything other than school work, and he does have other interests. I know it's an important year but it seems a bit unbalanced to me. Thoughts?

Quite sure, he was working in the same room as me most of the time! He had a homework timetable last year but it was never kept to. He has never not handed a piece of homework in on time and isn't afraid of working hard but this really doesn't allow time for anything else by the time he gets home and has tea. He'll be exhausted and fed up by half term if this keeps up!! Maybe things will settle down as term progresses.

To be honest, I'd rather the facility existed for 'homework' to be done in school after the end of timetabled lessons, just to get it out of the way. That way, hometime would mean just that, and create a clear line between work and 'play' (for want of a better word). He may get home later but then his time would be his own. And I agree with you Coolas in terms of what homework should consist of. Anyway, let's see how thing go.

Well dd is only 3 days in. She seems to have had it ranked up a bit from last year, but still plenty of time for other things.
Difficult for me to be precise as I don't stand over her - she's up in her room if she's doing homework or on FB or watching something on Cath up on her laptop, or palying her guitar, or whatever.

ds certainly didn't do anywhere near that amount.

I am expecting DD2 to do 15 hours a week homework 10 subjects @1.5 hrs a week each. That is how much the school expects its yr11 to do . This is ramped up from year 10 when It was 10-12 hours a week.

I'm not sure how many hours I'm expecting this year with DD2 but it does depend on the child and the subjects. DD1 now on A levels kept up all her extra curricula music and dance and did between 1-2 hours homework most days. She managed this herself and only missed a few family events that happened during revision time.

DD1 just started year 11 on Thursday and so far has been assigned 3 x 1 hour pieces of homework due Tuesday, so not nearly as much as OP's DS. She is at a superselective grammar. We have a parents evening next week to tell us the expectations for the year so I guess we will find out the norm there.
