I will ask the school about this for confirmation but I wonder if anyone could clarify how science works in gcse?

I just looked at the school website and it talks about single/ double/ triple science with the descriptions indicating that students study a combination of chemistry, physics and biology to greater depths.

I am surprised because, having done all 3 at school myself, there isn't much overlap between physics and biology. It would be like combining history and RE and saying "well they are both humanities".

Do schools not offer an option to choose which sciences to study, or is it just Ds's school that blends them without any alternative?

When I was at school (1970s) it was impossible to sit all three at O level due to timetabling! It was a huge (but dire) comprehensive. I remembering arguing with them as to what would happen if I wanted to be a doctor - their answer, do two now and the other one in sixth form on top of A levels. I didn't want to be a doctor, I was just being argumentative because it seemed so wrong. I did Biology and Physics.

At my DCs' school they all do Double Science - there is no option for Triple or Single.

I did Chemistry and Biology. Never really got to grips with Physics.

cv that is really poor!

CointreauVersial · 31/08/2014 21:07

Why poor, Wordfactory?

I only did two Science GCSEs but did Science at A level, and for a degree.

Actually, it's quite a relief not to have the option. It's a Specialist Language school, so that's where the choices are broader.

FWIW I think it would better to offer separate sciences so that those who find one of chemistry, biology or physics especially challenging, could do the other two.

I didn't like biology because i was squeamish about the dissections (and not especially happy about the contact with the locusts and cockroaches!). I can see Ds2 heading the same way, but he has a good, logical brain with a good memory so would do well in physics and chemistry.

I agree dalziel. Poor DS's Physics result is dragging down the other two. Sad
