Missed 6th form offer - help on way forward

My son is severely dyslexic and only got his glasses in year 10, after which his grade profile improved immensely. Unfortunately, just not quick enough and, although he managed A and B on the Physics components of his Core and Additional Science, his Maths grade at C means they won't let him take Physics A level. I am assuming that is a fair judgement.

So, where is he now:
C Grades in English Language, Maths, RE, Additional Science.
B Grades in ICT, Music, Core Science and Creative Media.
Then E in History, D in English Lit.

His remaining A level choices were all "softer" accounting/business/ICT related. His hobbies revolve around stage management/sound.

So, what do you reckon are his better options? I would think with that grade profile, probably a BTEC Business Diploma (actually that is what I did many moons ago), possibly an IT Diploma. With his history - maybe even a year resitting GCSEs - Higher Maths again, maybe English Lit and Triple Science (if that is even possible)?

Any comments appreciated!

Pursue his hobby with a Btec in something like Production Arts or Music Technology? My DS has just finished these.

What did he hope to do with his physics? Perhaps the college can suggest some alternatives which are similar.

A BTEC will get him into uni/advanced apprenticeships. I would advise though to go for a more broad based one such as Business or ICT to give more options later

He just loved the subject. He has always enjoyed sciences but Physics was his best. He didn't intend to particularly 'do' anything with it.

An advanced apprenticeship was what his was hoping to achieve, so one of those sounds like it might be suitable. I guess he should find out more about the units involved on each of them.

I suppose he could do IT diploma and A level Accounting or, vice versa, Business Diploma and A level ICT.

He did have a B in physics - he got an A last year (the component parts of his double science). It was the Maths at B he didn't get which they want as well.

It's a pity because he was more than capable its just the way the cookie crumbles and there is no point in moaning because that is what it is.

I'm surprised they weren't asking for A in maths and A or B in additional science to take Physics. Maybe depends how mathematical the physics syllabus is. Some 6th forms won't even allow it without at least taking AS maths alongside. Not a subject to be taken lightly if you don't need it, as we have found out this last year.

Why not some kind of business /ICT diploma as suggested, alongside A level Music or Music Tech?

sashh · 22/08/2014 07:28

Why business? Is e interested in that?

What does he want? Not now but where does he want to be in 2,3,5 years?

As he is good at science and maths could he look towards engineering via BTEC?

Can he do a computing (not IT) A Level alongside a BTEC?

CMOTDibbler · 22/08/2014 07:32

If he's interested in stage management, then why not persue that? My nephew is currently doing his degree in SM, the course has a 100% employment rate, and loving it! He decided not to do A levels, and to work until he could start the course (which didn't require A levels) - he did spend a lot of time doing lighting/sound/SM for various groups in that time

Business - he is quite entrepreneurial and currently does gardening self employed because he couldn't get a job locally age 15. He doesn't want to be gardener, however.

Thanks for all the comments! It seems the Physics requirements were the very minimum, so to have missed them makes it an absolute no-no.

He would like to get a Higher Apprenticeship but where he wants to be is a difficult one because he has lots of things he enjoys - ICT, Science (except Chemistry), Classical Civilisation, his hobbies, Music. Asking him this morning which one he enjoys the most above all- he says ICT.
