English Language GCSE retake advice

Cuckoocloud · 21/08/2014 19:46

My DS has just achieved ABBCCCCCCCD.
A in maths which is great. D in OCR English Lang, not so great.
He got a top mark in the speech and language part which apparently no longer counts.
Has anybody got any advice about retaking English or is anybodys DC in a similar situation? I was only able to have a short chat with the school staff as they were so busy.

Not much advice here sorry but just wanted to say that it seems that the lower than expected grade in English Lang is a common thing this year. At our school this was the case for many many pupils.

I hope all works out well and that you get some good advice soon.

He will have to retake it alongside whatever he chooses to do at college/sixth form. First resits are in November, if he doesn't get his C then, (results in Jan) then he will need to retake it again in June.

However, if you think he might just have missed a C, then you need to find the UMS from the school and discuss a possible remark with them to see if that could bump up his grade.

My DS got an E (OCR). I am gutted although he's a lazy little sod. Do check with the school. I am tomorrow on a couple of subjects which look like a couple of points shy of a C.
Go on the OCR website to see if you can find the grade boundaries

Cuckoocloud · 21/08/2014 21:03

Thanks for advice and comments. I will take a closer look at the grade boundaries.
I haven't been following the news today but have caught some coverage of problems with English Language GCSE pass rates. I think this is the first year they have done away with the speaking and listening part - which is a shame as my DS had already achieved top marks in it.

Sorry to hear that your son is in the same boat Chilly. I know how you feel, I am gutted too. It's such a pain that they will have to retake alongside their sixth form subjects.

Thanks Cuckoo. Have spent all day trying to talk to someone at college to discuss the way forward. No one to speak to so will have chase on Tuesday

We have a similar problem, my DS missed a C by 3 points and it has totally runied his chances of continuing to do A levels at his school. He got Bs in Maths and the Science subjects, however the school are not allowing him to do Science at A level. We have gone to the exam officier in the school and requested a remark. Initially, I thought that my DS was simply lazy, but all this talk about lowering English results may have some credence. We are now playing a waiting game - waiting for the results of the remark.

ChillySundays · 22/08/2014 23:14

Elfreda hope it goes well

Cuckoocloud · 22/08/2014 23:34

Good luck Elfreda. I have found out that my DS missed the C grade boundary by 6 marks so I don't think success with a remark is likely.
Probably looking at a resit in Nov or June but I believe the controlled assessments marks can be used again.
I think the school are going to allow him to do A levels but as nobody seems to be around to talk to I am not 100% sure.
Shame he got so many Cs, although it could have been a lot worse!

I have updated on a thread I started but am copying and pasting on a couple that I posted on

'Good news! We went to the college this morning and they are happy for him to do the level 3 course even though he hasn't passed his English. The fact he had a good crop of results including maths and the fact that if they had put him on the level 2 course he would be spending the next year covering what he had done at school did help.
All that worrying! My nausea has disappeared as well!
I hope things will work out for others. And perhaps what doesn't seem the right way at the moment will turn out to be a good move in the end'

He won't be able to resit in November and will have to start off doing functional english. If he pulls his finger out he can do the GSCE in June or do it in his second year.
