DD is year 10 and has just received her GCSE results for higher tier double science her overall score is coming it at 278 so overall grade is a C, benchmark for her predicted B grade meaning no resits next year is 280.
Please can anyone offer opinions on if you think its worth it and how to go about it.
DD struggles massively with exams and has difficulties with reading though does not get extra time to take the extra pressure by not having to redo these next year would be a big help.

Why not get copy scripts back on the paper(s) she lost most marks in? that way she can go through with teachers to see where she went wrong, and they should also be able to see if papers worth remarking - which there would still be time for.

hotmamalovespavlova · 21/08/2014 13:19

Is there a time limit for submitting? I am so gutted for her she tried so hard and despite me telling her a C is a great result she's not buying into it.
I am not sure she could recoup enough marks to change the individual papers grades except one paper where she got 69, 70 is the B Grade the others were 63/64 but am I right if she can obtain an extra 2 the overall grade will change sorry if I have misunderstood this but this is my first teen?

There is usually some kind of post-exams slip in with results that should give deadlines. I think ours are 17th Sept for remarks, but that may just be for AS/A2 with GCSE being slightly later (given results came out a week ago for A levels)

YES it is the total that counts for overall grade, and science practicals cannot be remarked.

Best speak to exams officer at school . They are generally around today to answer such queries.

Good luck!

Thank you Circular

My DS got 278 in science, I spoke to the exams officer at school & they will submit 1 of his papers for a re-mark. Good luck to both of them!

hotmamalovespavlova · 21/08/2014 15:38

How will they decide which paper Frances? I know there had to be a cut off but it is so far from the C 240 it is frustrating.

Is this for the core part of the GCSE and which mark is for Chem, Physics and Bio? Which GCSE syllabus is it?
Really you need to talk to the school OP and see what they would recommend. Definitely obtain copies of the papers which will show up where marks were lost before making your decision. The deadline is 17th September so you don't have to decide now.
However with remarks, it is possible that the mark may go down instead of up, so an increase is not guaranteed. If your child resits however the highest mark obtained is used. As your child is so close to the boundary, it may be possible to only resit one of the subjects rather than all 3.

hotmamalovespavlova · 21/08/2014 16:23

She got 63 in Biology, 64 in Chemistry, 69 in Physics and 82 in the controlled assessment. This is how they read Chem' A Mld C1, c2, c3 Hgh.
It was all very last minute her being entered to take them early as the school moved her up a group. I assume that it is the core part but wasn't given any information other than she was taking them with two weeks notice.
I have tried the school but no answer so will have to wait until th 3rd to speak with someone there is no info on th envelope other than her grades sheet.

Shockingly, last year I got all my pupils' papers remarked if they were a few marks below the grade boundary and a majority (about two thirds I think?) did go up a grade.

hotmamalovespavlova · 21/08/2014 17:02

Weasel would you submit all three if it was you? Based on the numbers I know it is unlikely she will go up a grade on each paper but there is surely a chance of 2 marks somewhere and does that out way the risk of being marked down as she is firmly above the 240.

It's going to be a long two weeks until the start of term.

OP posts:
fuckweasel · 21/08/2014 17:14

Yes, I would submit all.

hotmamalovespavlova · 21/08/2014 17:22

Thank you it's so hard to know what to do worst case scenario she will resit all next year as school will insist on this as below her predicted grade of a B.

There will definitely be people at school over the next few days, but usually between 10-3 is a good bet. I'd email the head of Science to see what they advise. If you want to get paper back and a remark, time is critical. Good luck.

FrancesNiadova · 21/08/2014 20:35

It was just on the 1 paper that he missed out on the B, by 2 marks, I saw it in the breakdown following the main results & phoned the school to query it. (Glad the staff weren't on their summer holiday!Wink )

hotmamalovespavlova · 21/08/2014 21:19

That sounds like it will be a happy ending for him I will keep everything crossed Smile I have emailed and will await the call back that you for all the replies

Thanks Norman's, fingers crossed for your DD too.

FrancesNiadova · 21/08/2014 22:48

Sorry, Kindle changed hotmama to Norman!

Sparklegeek · 22/08/2014 10:00

We were in a similar position last year. DS was 1 UMS below the A boundary so we had one of his papers re-marked (the lowest marked one, I believe it was Chemistry). He only had to gain something like a quarter of an actual mark to gain that extra UMS & get the A. He didn't Angry Sad

We are now in the same position at the end of year 11 - with surprise surprise, English Lang & Geography! All the rest were A*, he's less than a mark off in both of these so will prob go for it again but after last year not holding out a lot of hope.

It is sooooooo frustrating & I do actually think it's worse knowing you were that near.

Good luck to your DC.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 22/08/2014 10:32

DD got one very odd English and one fairly low drama grade.

I think I'd like both remarked.

Although I think school are going to query English as others have very low marks to.

No one answering the phone at school so glad to hear you can get stuff sorted into Sept.

RunAwayHome · 22/08/2014 13:11

I know someone in a similar position with the science, a few marks off the next grade - but in her case, it's the controlled assessment that really brought her down. Some of it was completed in Year 9, and some in Year 10, and the school has said no chance to re-sit it. Is that really the case? Or is it just that it is a lot of hassle for the school? It seems a shame that work from Year 9 counts, when she had a poor teacher and hadn't really matured enough to be writing at the level of GCSE work. Also, the two controlled assessments that were used were in physics and chemistry, the two she doesn't want to do at A-level.

If it can't be resat, can it be submitted for remarking, along with any or all of the exam papers, in the hopes that an extra four or five marks are found? She'd like to go on to A-level with biology, but the sixth form isn't going to be that happy with a B in Core, and it puts real pressure on her to make sure she gets at least an A for Additional next year.
