Is there a hand holding thread for Y11 parents and GCSE results yet?

DD is waiting on GCSE results next Thursday.

She is bouncing around being a teen on Summer holidays (she is off in Ireland for a week with her friend's family)

I am beginning to feel a bit sick.

She is hoping to stay at school and do A-levels, but now the results are getting closer I'm a bit concerned we don't have a back up plan.

How are the rest of you doing?

As an afterthought does anyone know if the threatened reduced SPaG marks for laptop users went into the mark scheme, especially for English language?

TalkinPeace · 29/08/2014 18:39

No idea, sorry.
Am chewing my nails waiting on full cohort re-mark at the moment

LIZS · 10/09/2014 08:21

Just found out ds was also within a mark or 2 of grade boundary for Maths and HOD is recommending a remark for paper 1 . Does anyone have a link to Cambridge igcse grade boundaries ?

snozzlemaid · 10/09/2014 22:03

Just heard today that DS's science that was remarked now has 3 more points so he now has a B. He was one mark away before so school paid for a remark.

TeaAndALemonTart · 10/09/2014 22:09

If you Google grade boundaries it will come up Lizs.

I'm hearing about lots of positive remarks, fingers crossed for those still waiting.

PurpleAlert · 11/09/2014 00:04

Waiting to hear about my DDs PE remark- she was 1 UMS off an A so the school suggested a remark.

We decided against a remark on her English Lang( taken a year early Hmm ) she was very low in the B grade boundary so we didn't want to risk it dropping even though she was getting A* s in all her mocks. Perhaps she had a bad day? Perhaps the marker was crap/ turned over two pages at once- but we just can't take the risk of it dropping to a c.

legallady · 11/09/2014 12:59

PurpleAlert, it is always a risk on a remark and if the examiner has to find a huge number of marks to take the grade up then I can see why you might not want to risk it. However, I don't know if it's just DD's school but pretty much everyone who has gone in for a remark has gone up. A close friend of DD had an increase of 15 ums on her English language paper (AQA) and my own DD gained 5 ums on one literature paper to take her from an A to an A*. In fact so many of the Spanish papers have gone up a grade (ones that parents paid for the remark) that the school has decided to get the rest of them done. It's staggering really that there should be so many discrepancies.

Well done to your DS, Snozzle. Brilliant news.

Purple I don't know what the time limits are, but could you still apply for just a copy of the paper (with no remark)? That way you would be able to see if something silly had happened, like missing out a page of the script.

TeaAndALemonTart · 11/09/2014 18:01

I thought they were all done electronically now.

halfthewaytothemoon · 11/09/2014 21:33

We had very odd English mark as well but school did not want to remark. AQA then sent through a higher grade because there had been a problem with a number of papers marked. Definitely ask for a remark if you have doubts.
Did anyone have a problem with Edexcel Business? DC given a C for a unit he had never scored less than a A for and mostly A* we are waiting for a remark.
Also music scores A* for composition in potfolio and the D for creative task which is essentially composition.
I got a bit tired of the whole thing.

Leeds2 · 11/09/2014 21:39

Halfway do you mean your DC got a higher grade without even asking? That is incredible!

TeaAndALemonTart · 12/09/2014 18:22

Our remarks took between 2/3 days, I was amazed by how quickly they came back.

That's great Halfway.

halfthewaytothemoon · 12/09/2014 23:08

Yes AQA sent the new grade without anyone having to request it which was great because DC needed A in Eng Lang for future A level options. Sadly neither maths or Business studies changed. We had to pay for both which amounted to £70, and when the grade did not change DC had to suffer all the disappointment again.
Still forward into A level.
regardless of the cost go for it just be a bit aware DCs can find the whole process very stressful especially if grades do not change.

Littleham · 25/09/2014 15:22

Thanks to everyone on this thread for their advice. If you remember dd 3 took English a year early (in year 10) and the four modules came back as A, A, A* and E, (overall B) which she thought was a bit odd.

Anyway, it has been re-marked & has gone up over 10 marks. Now a high A overall. She doesn't intend to do English later, so is very happy with the outcome (& that she doesn't have to do the exam again!).
