everyone know that over 90% UMS is an unofficial A* at AS level

Hakluyt · 16/08/2014 10:35

Do they? I have never heard it called that.

cricketballs · 16/08/2014 11:04

Aubreye; sorry to burst your bubble but A* is not awarded at AS level.......

Apologies, don't know what happened there!

in terms of my post, whilst yes in A2 an average of 90% UMS does give an A, at AS level there is no grade. He got As and there is no need to describe what UMS you got to anyone. I do apologise though for my abrupt response

frogsinapond · 16/08/2014 11:32

I think the point is though, that 90% or above is the level set by most schools to predict an A at A2 (at least without a quibble), so that is the target dc aim for with their AS results. That there isn't an official descriptor for it, so it makes it tricky to say what they've achieved, but naturally some (less pedantic) dc or their proud parents (more often) still want to reflect the acheivement and so latch onto the A prediction rather than the A grade.

There is no real need to say what grade you got to anyone either, but if you do then you may well want to reflect the extra achievement of 90%+ as well.

In answer to those who questioned the shared bathroom- Yes a Big deal for myDD who has emetophobia. She has had a year of therapy to help and just about has it under control but drunken vomiting students make her go into a flat spin, hence the en-suite bathroom requirement.

She also has fibromyalgia so a shared room which they suggested is not an option as she has enough difficulty sleeping as it is. They have now reserved her a room and she has to get a doctors letter to confirm her condition.

TeenyfTroon · 16/08/2014 19:57

Purple, you have just reminded me never to jump to conclusions. I was wondering why she needed her own bathroom and thinking back to my years at uni when only 'rich' people didn't have to share. Good luck to your DD - I'm glad she's got the room she needs.
Also reminded me of my uncle who always needed an en suite room in the days when they were a rare luxury. He'd been a POW in a Japanese camp and never really got over it.
It's so easy to judge. I must not do it!

PurpleAlert · 17/08/2014 20:30

Thanks Teeny- it does sound a bit precious- I always had a shared bathroom in halls and it never bothered me either but it's a big deal for her!

The annoying thing is that she already told the uni about the fibro but they claim not to know so we have to go through the rigmarole of doctors letters etc. They have said that with the evidence she will get an en suite single room but not necessarily in the hall she originally wanted.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 17/08/2014 23:33

That makes sense, I wouldn't have shared a room for all the tea in china and booked into the self catering flats, that didn't have any.

Bathroom didn't bother me, and I don't know if any of my flat mates were sick, in three years of living in those flats they must have cleared up.

The once I got that drunk it was a car park hedge outside the nice hotel at the summer ball that coped it.

PurpleAlert · 20/08/2014 13:48

Doctors letter worked a treat and DD not only got the sort of room she wanted but also in the halls she originally wanted! So relieved for her!
