Yes I know it's more about A level grades , thirst for the subject, lively PS , and aptitude test results. But taking all that as read, how many A*s would a typical student have out of say 10 or 11 academic GCSEs.

dreamgirls as an aside on the chemistry - your DD may want to think carefully about doing chemistry A level if she's doesn't step up to triple science as you hope. And even think carefully then - of all the A levels my DC have done, the step to AS chemistry has been the biggest, I think. It's a leap. And unless your DD wants to take it further or is certain of getting an A at AS, the she might be better advised to do some thing else to get the full set of As at AS level.

As for the original question - how many A at GCSE - my DS's school ( now graduated so five years out of date on this) used 8 A as the rule of thumb - if you got an interview with less than 8 you were lucky - my DS did - he only had 7 - but it's also down to the aptitude test, which he did really well in.

My DD1 had 8 and didn't get an interview - post mortem showed her aptitude test went badly.

So it's the combination of GCSE and aptitude tests that matter to Oxford.

For DD2, she applied to Cambridge with more A stars than the other 2 but it's the UMS scores that count: over 93 across 4 subjects will get you an automatic interview( one admission tutor did say, on an open day, 'if you get an interview, don't get excited, it just means you meet the criteria and we got your form')

Sounds like she's been going through hell, poor thing. Good luck with the move - sounds like she's going to do really well. And you're quite right to be looking into this so early - it's all in the preparation!
