It's on the list of required equipment, but they don't specify a particular type. What's a good one to buy? Thanks!

I bought a Casio FX-83GTPLUS for my DD. It is often on offer at supermarkets and is a good price at Amazon.

Maths teacher here. Any of the normal Casio calculators will be perfect (eg the FX83 or FX85 series). I'd avoid Sharp, HP and TI as teachers don't see so many of those and don't always know how to change the settings on them. Don't get the Casio FX115 or FX9750 series as they are more suitable for A level students.

That's really helpful - thanks!

Maybe worth waiting as they often sell them cheaply through school, then also they all have the same type!

Yep Our school sells them for about half the high street price.

Casio fx83 very cheap in tesco at the moment (half price) and included in the clubcard boost offer. I just bought 10 for my classroom! As cheap as through school suppliers. I gave up a couple of years ago selling them through school as they were cheaper in the supermarkets as they have huge buying power.

I wouldn't bother paying the extra for the 85 version, it is solar powered, but the batteries last years so they will have last it before the battery runs out!

I still have my Casio calculator that saw me through O levels, A levels and university, and I've never replaced the battery!

Cerisier no doubt knows what she's talking about.

I've seem many Y7, Y8 and Y9 kids flummoxed by "scientific" calculators, when the most scientific they need to be at that stage is square roots, or a value for pi. The more complicated the calculator, the harder it can be for simple operations.

Asda had them in for £6

*took the pic to show my new students - main thing to look for for GCSE is the fraction button. If they have that then they're usually suitable.

trinity0097 · 13/08/2014 06:13

Think they were about 50p cheaper in Tescos :-)

This thread has reminded me it's time to email all the parents at school and remind them to buy calculators!

babasheep · 13/08/2014 21:50

My dd bought hers from her secondary school stationery shop.

We were told which one to buy and they had it relatively cheap on the open evening. It is the Casio FX-83GT plus one.

It is now even cheaper in Asda and on Tesco Boost so we bought another to keep at home and as an emergency spare.
