Two state secondaries, similar area, similar cohort - how come one year 8 top set maths class got 50% level 8's and the other got none?

Title says it all really. I don't understand. Do different schools mark these end of year exams in a different way?

teddygirlonce His take on it is that the comp. ones are inflated! Not entirely sure I disagree with his view!

I am guessing that none of the children in your DS class were heavily tutored for the super selective intake exams. I am also guessing that none of them are using tutors whilst in the super selective either. I also assume that you are "not entirely sure you disagree with his view" as you and your DS have actually seen the finished exam papers of those who attained that level.

Pique, yes the rabbits provide context but are possibly the least interesting and most contrived thing about fibonacci. I'd go through it quickly then get onto the interesting stuff, not have the kids draw out rabbits. What's the point in that?!
