Has anyone tried to study for A level with a private tutor?. Would welcome any advice from MN who have either successfully home tutored or employed private tutor.
So far we have not had much success with tutors.

You might get more response from the Home Education area.

Coming at it from a tutor's perspective, yes. I had a 17 year old who had been pulled out of school due to mental health issues. I completely taught him 3 out of the 4 A-level units and he passed with A grades. He did have to go back into school for practical assignments (this was Biology) but otherwise everything else was through myself.

I'm an English tutor and have taught A level age students who for one reason or another have done the subject outside of school. It's definitely possible though does require a lot of independent study. It's expensive-most of my students in this position have had 2-3 hours a week with me and done the rest at home by themselves from September-February/March-ish, and then upped their hours with me for the final leg.

If the pupil is motivated, bright enough for A level and the tutor is good it works well. It can be horrendously expensive though, good tutors aren't cheap!

Here's the very big and busy home ed exams list which I'm sure you would be welcome to join: groups.yahoo.com/group/HE-Exams-GCSE-A_AS_Levels-OU-Others/ I believe that the majority of discussion will be about IGCSEs but there are certainly discussions there about A levels too.

Just take care when subscribing that you don't choose the option (I think it's the default for Yahoo) of having messages delivered individually by email, or you will drown in them!

many thanks I will follow this up.
We are trying for MFL . We have been offered something via SKYPE but I am not sure how well this would work. The cost is high £400 a month for 4 hours a week.

£25 p/h for A level is pretty good actually, though I suppose over Skype it might be expected. I charge £30 p/h at A level and I'm up north. In London you might pay £50 p/h or even more.
