He says he's 1 and 2 marks off passing in every subject apart from English and Spanish which he passed. He passed the EE and CAS too. He really thought he'd done really well in the exams. Watching my 17 year old trying not to cry was heartbreaking.
There was a meeting at the school before the exams to explain the marking system. Basically, if you fail, you can appeal BUT you'll be worse off - I don't know how, surely a fails a fail, but never mind - and you'll 'annoy' the IB people. You're implying they messed up. You can apply to resit, BUT any IB centre doesn't want fails as it reflects badly on them. So in reality, you're stuffed. Someone asked if they do resits and he said they would judge on a case by case basis, BUT they don't want to as fails reflect badly on them.
You can see how 'peachy' his school was.

We're moving to Oman next month, I'm going to ask the IB coordinator there if they do resits, we've nothing to lose just by asking.

If all that falls through, DS has said he'll move in with DS1, get a job, even if it's McDs/Aldi/Iceland!

Hairylegs So sorry to hear about your ds results. it's good to remember at this time that despite everything looking like it's lost at the moment, this is not true. It may not be the smooth road to success you were expecting, so a little bump and he's gone off course, but with determination he will find himself back on track again and can still go to university and achieve his dreams.

I like the fact that he's already thinking of getting a job! that's quite remarkable as many in his situation could just lock themselves away and refuse to engage with anything! This would be even more traumatic for everyone, but he's not, this shows he's still got that fighting spirit and is already looking at what next he can do.

I wish him all the very best in his endeavours, the travel to a new country and getting a new job, will open new doors and give him new experience. He may well be able to retakes as well. Good luck!

Of course you can apply for remarks. I think the marks can go down but they can also go up.

I teach in an IB school and we had a lot applying for remarks last year and quite a few went up. One went up by 3 marks on one paper. I think with emarking there is no longer the checking if someone is close to a boundary.

I don't think it is cheap going for a remark but I would look into it. Look at the parent section on www.ibo.org and see what they say.

I teach in the IB school in Muscat, Oman.

Drop me a message if you want to discuss stuff in more detail.

You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for all your help.

DS has reacted pretty badly to failing - his first ever fail at anything. I'm going to give him a few more days then I'll sit him down again to talk properly with him. At the minute, he never wants to set foot inside a school again.
