How can we prepare for this? I hear it is the hardest exam ever.
Ds is overseas and hence can't use a tutor. Current school is not a feeder so they have no clue. Are bond resources helpful? If not, what is?

"Not performance related but bursary related"
Are you saying the school removed or reduced the bursary? The school wrote fairly recently to parents suggesting that if the fees are causing then financial difficulties they should apply for a bursary, I understand that there is more than sufficient funds to cover the current bursaries and that Winchester are generous with their bursaries. Their vision is needs blind entry. There is usually more to any story (at whatever school) about a child who appears to be leaving unexpectedly than other parents are aware of.
Before my DS started we were warned by a friends that a work colleague DS had been asked to leave because he was not performing to the level expected of him. It also makes sense from the schools point of view and probably the pupils to ask them at the end the first year (is this what your saying? I'm not sure) to leave because it will then be possible to fill the vacancies created with other boys. Many schools state and independent are reluctant to take new pupils into yr 11 because they've would then be half way through their (I)GCSE courses.

HG, fully agree that it is often far more than just the headlines. Sure that every one of these cases has its own combination of reasons. Don't know any details and not looking for them either, but slightly surprised by second year departures.

After the first year or third year would seem more logical. Maybe it arises from being given another chance to mature or try the academic pace in the second year but without any success. As we all know brightness does not equate to enjoying academics.
