I am really panicking now... my 16 year old daughter has been offered a place in the 6th form but all signs are that if we cannot secure an address in the catchment our 14 yo going into year 10 will not be accepted. Anybody have any ideas..? I have been looking fior 4 months and very little had come up to rent or buy. Now with timescales I think we will have to rent but a small 3 bed is not going to hold all our stuff... even if there were some! Does anybody know if appeals are likely to fail even in catchment?? It would be a nightmare to compromise totally on a house we dont want... and then not be able to ensure a place anyway? Many thanks for reading ramble!!

You're an in year applicant so catchment shouldn't make any difference. They either have a vacancy in that year group, in which case it's yours if you've applied, or they don't in which case you're on a waiting list, and even if you're at the top of the list you won't get a place until someone leaves. Appealing will either work, and you'll be offered a place even though the year group is full, or you won't.

Does anyone have any idea how good a school All Saints in York is? I have moved from Northern Ireland and my son has been offered a place there but I dont know anything about it. Please help!!

MrsMaturin · 25/06/2014 18:05

All Saints is a decent school. You know it's a catholic school I assume?

I don't think it's any better than Fulford or Huntington however. Your son would be in pretty good hands in any of those schools.

Now to the OP - I don't understand why address is an issue either. Have they got vacancies in Year 9/10 now?

Also Op part of the renting problem you will have is that Fulford catchment is also close to the uni and landlords would rather fit 5 students in a four bed house than a family.

This is new to the rental market in Bishopthorpe which is the right catchment I think. Only 3 beds but a garage and sounds a good size. It's a nice village too if you're new to York. Decent amenities, you can walk or cycle in to York very quickly AND the archbishop lives there Grin

Thanks for the info... we have asked at the school and a teacher whilst showing us round said that he didnt think it would be a problem getting a place. We havent managed to speak to the headmistress but the secretary we spoke to said all year groups are full. They fluctuate all the time though... surely people move away from the area just as they move into it? We have found that rental properties are very expensive and yes- lots of them are pitched to students- expensive and poorly furnished. We need unfurnished. A previous poster advised me to come back on here to get advice about appeals... who do I consult? Many thanks

I think people tend to cling on to places at Fulford tbh.

makesomenoise · 25/06/2014 20:25

Have you looked at dunnington, elvington? These villages are currently fulford catchment and there are some lovely houses there for sale.
My experiences of all saints as a professional who goes into all york schools is positive and I would look at this as my second choice for my dd after fulford.

titchy · 25/06/2014 21:04

Prh47bridge, admission and tiggytape are the resident appeal experts. You need to apply first though! Have you done that yet? The catchment is a red herring, don't let it distract you. There either is or isn't a place.

Well, I succeeded with both children.. and we are renting in elvington. The difficult bit is finding a house now!! Still keen on the fulford area and local to there.. if anybody hears of anything on the grapevine we would much appreciate a heads up..Many thanks
