School uniform far too big for my dd what to do?

We visited a school uniform shop recently and got the smallest blazer for my dd although the sleeves are a little too long but at least she can just fold them in a couple of inches so not a problem. However even the smallest size skirt is far too big on her waist although the length is ok. I am going to check with the school if she can wear primary school size skirts. Any advices or hands on experiences?

Take it to a dry cleaners who have an alterations service and get it taken in and made narrower.

My MIL tacked the sleeves up on my DS's blazer and i just let them down once he grew into it. With dry cleaning you couldn't tell the differnce in wear on the sleeve.

What's the skirt like? I normally move the button on my DD's wrapover skirt but it it's a normal waist/zip, i'll get it altered professionally.

I don't know what your DD is like but my DC seem to only grown up and not out. As a consequence my DS wore the same size shorts for the first 5 years of school - they just got shorter as he grew taller. Even now we've moved onto longer shorts with the same waist size.

The shorts are primary not secondary btw Blush

Ask the supplier to order in a smaller size.

There are children at my dds school who wear age 6-7 clothing. Their uniform takes longer to come but if the school specify a particular skirt then they need to manufacture one.

Dds skirt has a pull in waist at least.

I'm anticipating problems when ds goes up to secondary as he is currently in year 5 & wears age 6. The secondary he will go to has a suit for boys in a special shade of grey.

I'm very concerned about DD2's uniform for the same reason. I know they don't make skirts small enough for her, because they didn't make them small enough for DD1 who was bigger than DD2 at this age. Same with the trousers. I am going to discuss this with the school but my plan is to send her in the same style of trousers she currently wears for primary school (they are allowed trousers) which really don't look different to the 'official' ones unless you look very closely. This tactic worked for DD1 until she was in Y9 and had grown a bit. Their real concern is that kids don't wear excessively baggy or tight trousers, and if DD2 went in the official trousers baggy wouldn't really be a good enough adjective to describe how she'd look! I'll get the official blazer and jumper and she will be drowned by them, I'm hoping nobody will notice the trousers as a result.

Of course it's always possible that DD2 will grow before September - DD1 finally started growing just after she was 11. Sadly DD2 won't be 11 until a few days before she starts in Y7. So she might shoot up too late!

If the supplier can't/won't order a smaller size, then go to the school and register your concern. In my DDs case this lead to the school talking to the supplier, and then the school shop being able to get smaller waisted skirts from another supplier but in longer lengths.
Sometimes you just have to get the school and the suppliers talking to solve a problem.

Ds has in the past become very upset about having to wear uniform that is miles too big (the rugby shirt was like a dress on him) he is sensitive about his size anyway so my stance became that if they wanted him to wear the uniform (& I'm all in favour of uniform) then they needed to provide the appropriate sizes.

sunsout · 10/06/2014 12:38

Phoned the school the lady staff said this is not a new problem. She will check with a year 7's mum whose dd is also very tiny to see where she got her dd's skirt from. Hope the school will come up with an inexpensive and practical solution. My dd was feeling a little sorry that her tidiness has caused so much problem. Blush

DD is petite. Luckily she was able to get uniform from M&S - age 10 skirt still fits and she's nearly 15! Do you have to buy from a certain shop?

LIZS · 10/06/2014 17:25

dd's secondary skirt has an adjustable waist and choice of length. The school shop even special ordered a swimsuit for her in a smaller size in correct colourway.

sunsout · 10/06/2014 18:24

bigTilly , I think secondary schools take their uniforms rules more seriously than primary schools.Grin But this is my first DC goes to yr7 so no real personal experience.

Also my dd s uniform colour is bottle green so not as easy to find in supermarkets I think.Hmm

sunsout, the age 10 skirt was bought for her when she went into Y7 (different secondary school to primary) She had a new one each year since - the waist still fits, and she likes them short! But hers is black, so much easier to find than bottle green!

Thanks Lizs I ve found a similar one on John Lewis website costs about £21. My dd has just started to wear size age 8-9 or 9-10 range. Although it seems a little expensive but if it is non iron and good quality and save time and money to have it altered professionally then it will be all worth.

If you have difficulties tell the school, they need to treat slight children with the same sensitivity they give to large children.

Purpleroxy · 11/06/2014 19:19

I alter uniform to fit my kids if it can't fit them as it is. You can also ask the shop whether they can get a particular size ordered specially for you. I have done this as well. Either way, I make sure that they have the correct uniform.
