Do yr7s get a lot more homework than yr6s? Do they get homework for every subject?

Thanks ladies, girls or mums

In primary school when looking at project works displayed I can tell that many dcs had a lot of help from their own parents at home. Are parents less involved in secondary schools?
I told my dc that when she goes to secondary school I will not be involved as much in fact she will have to do everything by her self including lunches. She seems ok about it.

DD has asked for very little help from us with her homework since she started with Y7.
Most of her homework is done in prep periods at school.

ThreeLannistersOneTargaryen · 05/06/2014 20:55

DS2 (Y7) does about 20 to 40 minutes each evening, then if he has a large project on the go, he'll also do a couple of hours at the weekend.

I estimate the weekly total is about 4 hours, which is about half of what is stated in the parents' handbook.

ThreeLannistersOneTargaryen · 05/06/2014 20:59

Since the first week of Y7, I have not given him any help with day to day homework, but he still needs support with bigger projects, in that I have to help him break down the task into manageable sections.

He occasionally asks me to read an essay before submitting it, but rarely takes on board my opinions.

He also needed some help in planning his revision for the end of Y7 exams.

Very little input from me in DD's homework though i'm normally called on to print things out as i'm the only one who can work the laser printer Smile

Dd has long hours & a long commute so she tends to do about 20 mins in the morning before school & does the rest at the weekend.

Hulababy · 05/06/2014 21:25

DD is supposed to get 2-3 subjects a night, and is supposed to spend 30-40 mins on each.

Reality is that is varies. Some subjects def send more than others. Some homework can be done in 10 minutes, others will take an hour. If it is on the computer or something that needs presenting nicely DD will spend far longer on making it look just right.

DD didn't get that much homework in the last half of Y6 tbh anyway. She has entrance exams in January of Y6 and it was the first term of y6 and the last part of y5 which were the heaviest for her.

No homework for past 3 or 4 weeks as DD has end of year exams this week. 15 exams, 14 subjects so instead she has had revision.

Hulababy · 05/06/2014 21:26

And yes, far less involved. Now we only really know about homework if she isn't sure about something - and then we help. Or it is something she is particularly interested in and she decides to share it with us.

Picturesinthefirelight · 05/06/2014 21:28

I don't know how some children fit in this amount of h

Picturesinthefirelight · 05/06/2014 21:29

Fit in this amount of homework

Dd has a long commute but even if she didn't she probably wouldn't be in til 7-8 pm must nights. That only leaves an hour before bedtime.

Kids need a life.

searchers · 05/06/2014 21:35

One subject around 30 mins a day. Prep school

KingscoteStaff · 05/06/2014 21:58

2 subjects, around 1 hr 15 mins a day. Prep school.

However, the boys in the scholarship classes are now being expected to organise their time to fit in extra 'reading around the subject'.

sunsout · 05/06/2014 22:23

What about after school activities e.g. sports and musical instrument? Have your dcs managed to keep them up? My dd takes her gym and music very seriously it will be ashamed if dd has to stop any of the outside school learning and clubs.Hmm

DD has taken up more activities since she started high school.

She has after school activities 4 days a week and 3 lunchtime clubs (thinking about a 4th in September). Plus she plays 2 instruments.

It's manageable at the moment.

merlehaggard · 06/06/2014 08:41

My daughter's year 7 and manages 2 instruments plus singing and swim team and 2 orchestras/bands without any trouble.

mankyscotslass · 06/06/2014 09:04

DS still does cricket and football out of school, involving coaching sessions and matches, and also does chess one night a week plus competitions.

He also has choir 2 mornings a week before school, plus the associated competitions with that, and also the concerts involved.

He has chess at lunchtime at school, and table tennis after, plus after school interform competitions.

So far he has managed ok, even when he has had weeks where he has had 60-90 minutes worth of home work most nights!

BackforGood · 07/06/2014 00:30

Yr7 dd does get a lot more than in Primary, but they only had 1 short piece of English and 1 short piece of maths per week in Primary. Some days she'll tell me she's "got 4 lots of homework to do tonight!" in a wounded tone, but they usually only take her about 10mins each, so even on the 'heavy' days it's less than an hour - mostly, it's considerably less.
dd is doing fewer things after school than in Primary, but that's because she was doing a lot of sports at Primary which just don't happen at her secondary - she still has plenty of time for her piano lesson, her Scouts, her football, her cricket, etc., etc. that she does, not related to school, and also for just playing with her friends Smile
A lot depends on their travel time of course.

KingscoteStaff · 07/06/2014 17:26

I guess it depends on travel, but my DS is managing 1 instrument + orchestra, 3 sports practices + matches, 60 - 90 mins of homework a night + one off things like House poetry speaking.

If he doesn't have after school sports training then he does prep 4-5 - quite often that means he gets it all done before leaving school. He doesn't go to bed until 8.45, though.
