How to help DS with gcse Spanish pls

DS is in yr 10 and has had a tricky year with a few subjects. He was really struggling with maths and sciences but with some tutor help he has really turned things round :-)
He still has a blind spot with Spanish and I'd like to give him some help (can't afford another tutor) but I didn't do Spanish.
Are there any things we could start with. His problem tends to be that he finds subjects difficult and lacks confidence to ask for help. He then gets increasingly behind but then once he has grasped the basics he does ok. He is willing to work hard.
We're not looking at an A* but he would love to get a B/C.
Any pointers really appreciated.

I wonder if you could find some basic language videos on Youtube, chances to practice listening skills at least.

enormouse · 04/06/2014 11:00

Which bits does he find hard? Is it the grammar or pronunciation? Or making out the words in listening exercises?

enormouse · 04/06/2014 11:04

As a general help tool I found this really helpful when I did GCSE Spanish. I hope it's still relevant.

blossommy · 04/06/2014 21:08

I hadn't even thought about looking in YouTube - thanks will do that.
And thanks for the bite size reminder enormouse - I've had a look through the link you've posted and found it really helpful already.
Embarrassed to say I didn't do any languages at school so whereas I can help him study the other subjects I've felt a bit useless with this. Thanks for replying - he's really worked hard this year so want to help him where poss.

Try www.languagesonline.org.uk. Lots of vocab practice. (I teach KS 4 Spanish)

Google is your friend - there are masses of resources online - dig around and see if he can find anything that suits him.

Mine like greenmouse

ShanghaiDiva · 05/06/2014 07:44

Memrise - free online resource is good for building vocabulary.

We found the spanish cartoon YouTube videos really useful (I hope, we'll know for sure when results are out) as they speak slightly slower so dd could work on her speaking and listening

Posted to soon
We also bought some HarryPotter books in spanish for her to read as she knew the story

Chilephilly - that website looks great thank you.

Am trying to help DS with yr8 German but my german is very rusty. I am shocked at how rusty it is as I have an A at A level! It was a long time ago I guess......

throckenholt · 05/06/2014 09:50

rusty will come back soon - honest - I have been doing languages with my kids and it is easy to keep several steps ahead of them - it is amazing how the vocab comes back with a bit of use.

Shouldwego · 05/06/2014 10:10

Thanks for that throckenholt I hope so!
