Quick exam question.

Dd unbeknown to us has been entered for Further maths. She's not ready to take it ( she's year 10) but is determined to try.
Not happy, I thought they couldn't resit anymore ( the first sit is what counts) and it clashes with biology, so they will be in isolation for a few hours.
I'm speaking to head of maths this evening. I'm not really sure what to say!

Anyone?

I'm not sure what your question is!

dingit · 19/05/2014 17:51

Sorry. Do you think she should be taking it? She got an E in her mock. Ideally she should take it next year (11). I would much rather she concentrated on her double science. Also, I thought they couldn't retake. Or is that just gcses? Do I make sense now? Was posting quick before teacher phones me later!

She got an E in her mock, so she is not ready. She has another year to study, and can sit it in year 11. I want her to concentrate on her double science. I also thought they weren't allowed resits? So she can't just see what she gets and then sit again next year, as only the first grade counts.

Argh. Now my iPad is playing silly beggers.

Has she already taken maths GCSE, or is the idea she does both this round?

Obviously you need to know why the teacher thinks it a good idea to enter her now, especially in light of the grade at the mock. And how on earth you didn't find out until so late on what she's been entered for (what were you told after the mock?)

dingit · 19/05/2014 18:07

Yes she sat GCSE last year. The first I knew of the further maths entry was when I got her exam timetable this week. Even though they had sat a mock paper, I thought entry had been delayed to year 11.

Students can resit a whole qualification, just not individual units. Their best result counts for them, their first result counts for the school. But she shouldn't be entered until she is ready.

dingit · 19/05/2014 18:14

Brilliant Fallen, that's what I needed to know. I don't think she's bothered about a poor result, just wants to try, especially if she can resit. The result is no consequence to the academy, as they will not post results past GCSE ( no sixth form)

However... I think on UCAS all results, even where traits done, have to be given...

TheFallenMadonna · 19/05/2014 18:17

Resits. Not traits...

dingit · 19/05/2014 18:34

Hmmm, so an E is not going to look too good.

You do not have to put all GCSE and A level results on UCAS so she can simply leave the Further Maths off the form if the result is not good. Obviously there are some that are essential, such as Maths, Eng and Science. Other than that, you do not have to declare all of them.

goinggetstough · 28/05/2014 11:14

jeanne that is not quite true about exam results and UCAS. You have to put all exams taken if they are graded.

jeanne16 · 28/05/2014 11:54

I work in a school and I assure you they do NOT have to put all results on their UCAS forms.

Scoobyblue · 28/05/2014 12:24

It says very clearly on the UCAS site that you must declare all qualifications which you have a result for including any which are ungraded. You can check for yourself but it is very clear.

LIZS · 28/05/2014 12:26

what did she get for Maths last year ? Unless an A* this is madness.

merlehaggard · 28/05/2014 12:39

It does very clearly say on UCAS applications that ALL graded results should be out down. Not everyone does, but you clearly are supposed to.

merlehaggard · 28/05/2014 12:39

It may well say ungraded as well but I know def graded ones have to be declared.
