I know parents who's kids go there, I've only heard positive things about the school .

As I'm sure you know, STAGS is very highly regarded, and sought after. Maybe you could let us know the other school in the equation for your DD if not STAGS?

bigchangesaroundhere · 18/05/2014 11:18

Thanks madaboutschools and mumoftwo100. I don't know anything about STAGS. We don't live in St Albans and I don't know anyone with a girl there. There isn't another school in the equation - she will go there I just wanted to see what other people's opinions about it were. It appears from googling that it became an academy quite recently and a change of head too. Does anyone know why it became an academy and what this means for a school? People say that all the secondary schools are good in Herts but I haven't a clue! Many thanks.

If you are talking about St Albans Girls School, STAGS, that is an independent fee paying, school, not an academy. Where is the school you are referring to OP?

Expatmomma · 19/05/2014 06:32

No STAGS is an all girls comp and St Albans High School for Girls is the Inde.

I knew lots of girls there in the past and it had in my time an excellent reputation for academics and music.

St Abans Girls School ( or STAGS) is a state school, has a good reputation. Millymolly you must be thinking of St Albans High School for Girls which is a very selective independent school from age 4-18.

I'm surprised how OPs DD got into STAGS without living in St albans ? don't you have to be in the catchment to get in?

mumoftwo100 · 19/05/2014 16:56

Barrackobana - being an all girls school the number of potential SEN, Looked After, Staff, medical, Sibling is halved, so only take around 20% of the places. Also, the priority given if it is the nearest non faith/partially selective school which makes provision for girls actually only encompasses a small area, leaving over half the places to be randomly allocated within the priority area, which is mahoosive and stretches for miles. So even if you were ages away but still in the priority area, you could get a place over someone living much closer.

barrackobana · 19/05/2014 21:03

Mumoftwo - Thanks for explaining, how very interesting! i'd ave thought a school like that will be so heavily oversubscribed you wouldn't get a look in unless you lived practically on the doorstep!

Thanks everyone. Going to have a look around next week.
