I've seen an advert for this position in a local high school. I would like to apply but haven't actually ever come across this role before. I'd be really interested to hear from anyone who had this job or works alongside. Info on what exactly the job involves and any tips would be great.

I'm thinking its old school head of year or behavioural team. you should send for details and ask to go and look around. that always looks good Smile

It's the poor bugger who deals with all the fallings out on Facebook Twitter Instagram etc, incidents of bullying, kids generally not settling in, MH issues and any and all other emotional issues kids have, generally being their confidant when they need. It's a tough job and I have every admiration for those that do it.

Hmm, that doesn't make it sound quite as appealing...

Have a look at Educating Yorkshire. Their Pastoral Care team was featured all the time ! I think there is job satisfaction but you need the hide of a rhino to deal with the issues in school and the parents. Just look at all the bullying angst that come up on Mumsnet! If you have not had experience in this field of work, is this the job for you?

The Pastoral Care team at my sons High School are great, as is his head of year, without them im not sure where I'd be.. I dont know how they put up with him to be honest.

Where is it Grin

MrsDavidBowie its something I think I'd be intrested in, prehaps when my 'little toad' has gone through the school system, mind you I might be to long in the tooth by then Grin

It's a very tough job, as I see in my school. However, very, very rewarding. There's something about our pastoral team, which makes them more respected than even the head teacher. The kids really warm to all of them. It's very special role I think, like being the school mum.

There's a fair amount of child protection involved though. Lots of the kids will confide in the pastoral team, before their parents or even their friends, so be prepared for that. Child Protection training is definitely something that would set you aside from other candidates.
