Are you supposed to apply for more than one 6th form?

I'm totaly confused!
DD is at a High School that doesn't have a 6th form. So far we have looked at a Grammar, Academy and Tech.

The GS offers what she wants to do. The Academy didn't, but there was a Btech science course. The tech has a science exam that is the equivalent of 3 A levels.

To get into the GS she has to go on the day of her results, to try to get an interview , it's first come first served, once the pupils, all ready there have a place.

All the schools serm to do it this way.
Should she have applied for the tech as a back up in case she didn't get into the GS?

Do you have a local FE college that offers A levels?

Back in the day (my school didn't have a 6th form) I applied to the local 6th Form College.

We had to apply in advance but getting in was conditional on our results.
I also applied for the local FE college as a back up, they offered the subjects I wanted but it was 3 rather than 4 a levels & a lower gcse grades criteria

I imagine the 6th form of a grammar can be more selective.

Sorry the tech is our FE college. We went to talk to them a few weeks ago but they said she would be more suited to a GS because if her predicted results. They said it (the science one ) might be too easy for her Confused.

The sticking point seems to be she wants to do chemistry and biology, and nobody but the GS can facilitate this out of the three options.

The Academy don't offer it because they don't have enough people wanting to do it and she couldn't do Btech science and biology together.

There is another girls GS, but I haven't seen when it's open night is/was.

That seems an odd way to go about it. Usually, schools will ask for 6th form applications well in advance of GCSE results - around February is the most common. This is sensible - how else can staffing/curriculum/timetabling be sorted? There is about a week between GCSE results and the start of the next school year.

Cocolepew · 06/04/2014 18:21

We're on N.I so that's why it's different , but I agree it's not a very sensible way of doing it. Especially when all the interviews are on results day. She can't be in 2or 3 places at once.

The Academy said they could maybe offer chemistry but at the boys GS, which is about half an hours walk away. But they couldn't guarantee it .

She is away upstairs to apply online for the FE college course, as a back up plan.

It's definitely first come first served, they made it very clear on the open night. Obviously you need the right results, but they don't take an A* over an A, for example.
With the Academy you registered with what you wanted to do but not the GS.

At the open night there were 22 pupils not all ready at the GS having a look around. Thd HOD said they usually take 18.
It makes no sense to me

No year 12, she's 16.

so OP's daughter is in year 11 and does not have year 12 lined up
that's awful
DD got her college offer just after Christmas ( conditional on GCSE of course)

Cocolepew · 06/04/2014 20:44

What I would call 5th year is year 12 here. The last year of primary us P7 and first year of secondary is year 8.

I think it must be different in NI - I think over here you apply to your 6th forms of choice and then get a conditional offer. That is in December of Y11, I think. Then when you get your results, you hopefully get into the one you wanted with the right grades. Not sure what you do if you don't get them.

We will have it all to worry about next yearSad

TalkinPeace · 06/04/2014 20:46

so her exams start in just over a month and she does not have a place outlined for September?

time to jump up and down and SCREAM at the school to sort it

It's the norm over here. That's just the way done. Nothing I can do will change it.

She has registered interest in the FE college as a back up. We're still waiting for other schools to have their open nights.
