My child is currently in yr 7 when can I apply for a place in yr 8 of a different school?

My question is just above when can I apply for a year 8 place? I assume they will say none available and I can then appeal?

Thanks in advance

Whenever you like. Get an in year transfer form from the LEA.

as martorana says, you can apply now for an in-year transfer. you'll be limited by what places are available, but you can go onto a waiting list for school/s that you want

If you apply now and there is a vacancy for you (which at this stage would obviously be in Y7), you will be expected to take it up quickly rather than waiting until September and the start of Y8. The school/LEA almost certainly wouldn't want to keep a place vacant for so long.

Bear in mind too that, especially in areas with very mobile populations, there can be a lot of movement in and out of schools and the situation with regards to empty places and waiting lists can change from day to day.

I moved DS1 in year in Year 8, he was at the new school in about 2 weeks, as they had spaces.

I'm in a primary, I think the most we can offer people is a start date 20 school days in advance. Although previously we could offer places for Sep, anytime after the Whitsun half-term.

Although if you think it's likely to go to appeal, maybe you should apply asap and get on the waiting list (if they still have them).

The school I want is full. I appealled for a place in yr 7 and lost so I want to know when I can apply again for yr 8, I know they'll say no and then I can appeal again. But obviously need to know timescales about appeals as I've already appealled. Does that make sense?
Thanks

Yes, sorry Boygirl, and in that case my post was no help at all.You will need to contact the school/council in that case?

PanelChair · 05/04/2014 08:52

Ah. That's a lot clearer.

You can appeal once per academic year.

Our local, outstanding comp has a surprising amount of movement, given that it's in leafy Hants. The DSs speak of several DC whom they knew in Y6 but who couldn't get in but who suddenly appeared at the school, in one case, 2 terms into Y7.

I actually think your chances are better in Y7/8 than in Y9 as it takes 'a committed parent' to uproot a potentially settled DC from one school to another so early on; but by Y9 it's often more obvious whether your DC is going to do OK for GCSE at the less-desirable school or whether you need to Make The Move.

You can appeal more than once in an academic year if circumstances change. If we are talking about the school and child I think we are I would argue that there has very definitely been a change of circumstances. I don't want to say any more here because I'm not sure how much you want to share publicly.
