Christ's Hospital 13+ Admissions

Lost..

My son is really keen to try out for Christ's Hospital 13+ admissions. He would be applying for a full bursary place. He is currently at a state school.

He is a bright boy and the levels CH applicants would need to be at the end of year 8 are SAT 6/7 - He is in year 7 and currently working at level 6c/b/a in Science,Maths,History,Geog and RE and level 7b in English. (lower levels in languages, drama and art)

But his behaviour has not been great.. Quite a few detentions, cheeky to teachers and a fight at the start of year 7 that resulted in a suspension.

I am unsure if its worth him sitting the exam etc as I don't wish to get his hopes up - I have explained that from now on his reports need to be shining - but would this be too late?

How fierce is the competition? Would his behaviour record totally let him down? Would your reports all have had to be immaculate?

Sat looking at the website now and the whole application process is quite daunting! And I think if we are going to try out we need to be starting the process ASAP!

Scary stuff...

There is no harm in trying. CH is very hot on behavior, my son (yr9) says that no one misbehaves in class (how true this is, I don't know!)

The misdemeanors are early on in yr 7, my son was a nightmare in yr 4 and we had to send that report off to the school Blush and he got in, my ds2 applied this yr and his reports are glowing, but he didn't pass the residential because academically he's not as clever as dds1 (yet!)

So, if he keeps his nose clean for the rest of the year (they'll ask to see this years report, and they get a report from the Head) I don't think he'll be any disadvantage.

derektheladyhamster · 24/03/2014 10:36

and of course the teachers saying how much he's improved, will look good Grin

Good luck - it's a great school

NigellasDealer · 24/03/2014 10:39

the head of his school needs to confirm that he is 'of good character and deserving of a place' -

hippppy · 24/03/2014 10:47

Thank you :)

I know his levels are pretty good and his teachers have said how much potential he has... he is classed as G & T in pretty much all his academic subjects.. but has been labelled under achieving and has not been trying his hardest.

I will have serious chats with him after school ;) Maybe this will be the kick up the bum he needs to get his behaviour totally on track and his target levels met.

It does sound a fantastic school - any idea how many applicants and how many spaces are given in year 9?

I'm really not sure, it is less than yr 7. try posting on
the unofficial christ's hospital forum one of the posters is involved with admissions, look under parents, past and present.

derektheladyhamster · 24/03/2014 10:55

potential is a big area they look at Grin

Brilliant - thank you @derektheladyhampster

I wish I could pick and choose the reports they read..and the teachers they speak too.. :D

No harm in trying I guess - but he needs to know if he really wants this he has to work for it!

Just been up there with my own son for this September and I asked how many places for Y9 entry, and they said 30 to 40 every year, if that is any help. They told me 90 new entrants in Y7, plus these extra in Y9.

Hi hippy

The only comment I would make is you would be extremely lucky to get a full 100% bursary , you would need to be on benefits , if u read the ch forum you can through the whole process then to get get a big enough bursary in fact its happened at a number of schools you'll be promised 1 thing verbally but when it comes down to the offer its not what you thought it was . I wish I had asked more questions in the beginning but coming from state system I didn't know any better lady muck or middleclass hopefully will advise but do your research they are out there to be had but the competition is fierce

Teddingtonmum1 · 25/03/2014 18:29

Meant to say then not get a big enough bursary after going thru all the exams BUT you can go back and plead your case if you need as bit more as sometimes they get refusals so there is more money in the pot .

My child has got a place at CH for year 9.

On the new entrance taster day for Sept 2014 yr 9 - there were about 30 children - appeared fairly equal amount of girls and boys.

The present pupils were really lovely and welcoming!

We are quite excited and looking forward to September ( actually Aug 31st)!
