In preparation for next week's CAF results i am wondering if anyone can share their impressions/opinions on the new headteacher at WCGS? As the former deputy does it look like he will continue along similar lines to Mr Smart?

Also i'd appreciate comments on whether your son meets up with friends after school/at weekends much? or do DCs come from too wide an area for this to be a regular occurrance? We had the impression there was more of a community feeling here compared to Wilsons; with parents more involved too - is this the case?

Can't help you as I am curious myself. I note that Wilson's has gone down the same route and also appointed a deputy head as the new headmaster.

Hi there,

My son is there - and the new Head is brilliant. The general consensus is that the school will get even better.

Yes the boys do come from a very wide area, but they do have a lot of after-school clubs, and lots of them do live within 10 miles or so of the school.

I'd thoroughly recommend it.

I'm bumping this thread as my son has been offered a place there and I'm also desperate to find out more from parents with children currently at the school. Does anyone know what the English department is like? is the subject taught in a creative and stimulating manner and is there a good balance between contemporary literature and the classics included in the books studied? I've looked on the website but there is only a small amount of info included about this. Any input would be very much appreciated Smile.

hi apricot
my son has only been there since September so it's difficult to give you much detail about the English curriculum yet. I would suggest you phone the school and ask if you could email the Head of English for some more info. It's a great school.

Thank you for your comments - great to hear your son is enjoying yr 7 so far. We are agonizing (rather i am!) over the decision to potentially turn down a place at Wallington (DH and DS sold on our indie offer) - not made any easier by the fact that we can't get a second look at the school!!

Thanks a lot for your feedback scornedwoman, I'll contact the school and see if that's possible. It does seem like a lovely school and somewhere my son would be really happy. just got all of the induction events info in the post, really excited as it all feels so real now!

apricotdanish · 05/03/2014 13:44

I understand icklemonst, I called to ask for a visit but I guess there are so many parents who want to have a second look, post allocations, that logistically it wouldn't be possible to accommodate all the requests. If both your son and DH are sold on the indie it will be tricky convincing them both of the merits of Wallington over the indie and and making a decision when their hearts are already with the other option.

icklemonst · 05/03/2014 14:32

True, but i would like to feel we had looked at it as thoroughly as we have been able to with the indie. It seems a shame they don't have another 'official' open day after results are out when you know your son certainly has a place - i would definitely look at it with different eyes!

Anyone turned down or planning to turn down a place at Wallington? Interested in waiting list info!

What did you decide icklemonst?
