Any French teacher around?

I was wondering if you could give me an idea of what you are using with your students when they first start to read in French.

My 2 dcs are bilingual. I want to encourage them to read in French but can't find anything suitable. All the easy books i can find are for 5~6yo and they won't touch those.
Anybudeas?

I'm not a French teacher, but speak French. I buy my teen DDs French magazines appropriate for their age group.

You could order French novels via Amazon - it might be an idea to get them French translations of books they've already read in English so that they already know the story.

Do they like Tintin, Asterix etc?

The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint Exupery?

The Petit Nicolas books are fun (you can get them on kindle).

How old are your DCs?

Order them copies of books they have read in English e.g. Harry Potter. If they're not so proficient at reading French, then knowing the story will help.

Lots of great books on the Little Linguist website, I often buy story books that I know my pupils will have read before from there and it's very surprising how much secondary aged pupils enjoy reading familiar children's books in another language.
Mary Glasgow magazines are another good reading resource, I'm sure you can get an individual subscription to a couple of those, they have very good content that is current and interesting.

I've also been looking at this website for magazines to use in some private tuition I do, but I haven't ordered any yet so I don't know if they're any good.

How old are they? Tbh most teens I know seem to just read translations of English books (the dreaded Twilight etc) and if they're bilingual they shouldn't have much trouble picking up the written forms.

How old are they? The Contes by Freres Grimm might be good especially as they will "know" many of them.

They are 8 and 10yo.
We have most of these books at home (Le petit prince, magazines, tintin etc...) but they seem to find these too hard to read?

I have done some work with them so they could learn some of the sounds in french that are different (eg ou, in, en ...). And I know that they can read as such.
It's like the fact that the lack of fluency stops them from trying as it is so much easier in english. And what they could read fluently is so babyish and boring that they don't even bother to try.

Maybe the answer is just to 'force' them to read aloud in french just as I have done in english with them

I am still reading to them at bed time though. Hence all the books and magazines.
