Definites are Drama and Computer Science.

DS has to make two choices from the following:

History
Geography
Triple Science
Resistent Materials

He has dyslexia, MFL are out. Average at Maths. Science is his best subject but he is also very creative. Possible future career paths: PR, anything in the theatre, computer game design, something creative, he has no idea...

Science tutor asked him to consider what door he might be closing if he choose Triple Science although the Triple might give him his best chance of highest grades.

He likes History, Geog and Res Mats.

We are stuck and decision needs to be made sharpish.

Thanks

Is he likely to want to do any science at A level? If so, it will be easier if he has done triple science Lot of writing in history and geography - will his dyslexia be a problem? Not sure what 'res mats' is?!

Res Mats is Resistant Materials (woodwork and the like). Has to do Design Specs and Evaluation type coursework so no escape from the writing. Two hour exam which is mostly questions and a bit of design with one page essay type answer at end - manageable.

No idea about science A Levels but would suspect a more creative route. Would have considered Art but for the enormous workload.

He should choose subjects that he likes best & these will hopefully also be the ones he is likely to do best in...

Triple science would be a good choice as it will keep lots of science & technology careers open to him & he'll find it easier to progress to science A levels, if that's what he decides to do.

Would DT allow him more creativity than History/ Geography? Although there would be a lot of coursework, most of it can be done on a pc, so maybe he would find that easier?

Does he actually fancy studying History or Geography though? If the interest is there, it might outweigh the difficulties he might face with his dyslexia...

Art is an excellent subject for creative types. Hard work is required but why not if you are good at it? Theatre set design for example could be the way forward. Also PR degrees prefer A levels such as English, Psychology, Law, Business Studies, Media Studies - so I think you maybe need look up a few course requirements. Therefore if his GCSEs are intended to lead on to A levels, it might not be the best idea to drop Art, but cannot see the advantage of triple science if he is not likely to want a career in science. He should not be afraid of the amount of work in art if it is helpful to a future career. It is possible, of course, to do a broad range of GCSEs so all options are kept open.

history is a lot of essays, maybe geography & another DT subject if he's so good at stuff with his hands? There are at least 4 DT options at our school, including DT graphics.

He's gone for Geog and History - lots of writing but more support at home available. He can use a laptop. Res Mats blighted by bad behaviour and a huge amount of evaluation type coursework. Thanks for your advice. Hugh relief that the decision has finally been made.
