Had a call from the College DD has applied to about her SEN help, and what help would be put in place for her professional Chef NVQ.

It sounds like as long as she doesn't fluff the interview in a couple of weeks!

(This is a MAJOR 'thing', as I've spent years on here agonising about what will happen after Y11 as she has to stay till 18, and has moderate LD's)

Any advice that I can give to a surly teenager about how to get through the interview? I don't even know if I can go with her!

HELP!!

That was meant to say "it looks like she has a place as long as she doesn't fluff the interview in a couple of weeks"

Could she ask at school? They may let her do a practice.

I think they MAY have done, I'm unsure. (See above comment about SURLY teen...)

And she gets flustered around people she doesn't know, part of her SN's. I DO know the College to be good with students that have SN's, especially this course though .

First time for College , this is DC1, and the SN's add a whole other layer of angst!

Well done for getting this far... Does she want to do the course or is it hard to tell?

I guess listen to the questions, don't be scared to ask them to explain things and smile...

FE Colleges tend to be very used to surly teenagers.

I would phone the college to ask if you can go with her if she wants, then ask her if she wants you or not (and set aside the time anyway unless she suddenly wants you at the last minute).

I think the main thing they often want to see (if its not a highly competitive course like Animal Health) is that the student applied rather than was forced to apply.

Good luck for her.

She has wanted to do this since she was 7yo - but is having a "school is crap and why do I have to go" stage. Which I hope will improve massively if/when she goes to College and can wear what she wants, and do what she is wanting to do, educationally!

That good news :).

DS2 interview at FE college was really informal, just asked about his interest in the subject and how he was doing in school in related subjects.

cricketballs · 21/01/2014 17:50

As creamteas has said, it's not normally an interview as such, more a discussion as to the suitability of the course in terms of correct level, subject etc

outtolunchagain · 21/01/2014 18:00

Couthymow I think we are in a similar geographical area, my ds2 has SEN and we have a chat/ interview this ThursdayShock.I so want this to work for him, but am petrified about the size of the college and the number of people etc.We are in a town beginning with I.

outtolunchagain · 21/01/2014 18:01

Sorry meant to say well done to your dd and hope it goes well.Does she have a statement?

CouthyMow · 21/01/2014 22:10

No statement, though she should IYSWIM. Yes, I is the next town up from me, I'm in the town with a Castle...

Blood from a stone would be easier than a statement from my LA (is it amusing that autocorrect tried to change that to alas?!) with no behavioural difficulties, despite moderate LD's & a whole host of other medical issues...

She gets 15 hrs on SA+ & floating support in every lesson. Well, she DID get floating support on every lesson until the school became an Academy and started sacking all the TA's...

But because the floating support isn't quantified in a statement, and can't be added to her IEP officially as that would take her over the 15 hrs and Essex aren't about to allow that as they'd HAVE to statement her, there's bog all I can do about the lack of TA's.

She still gets floating support on core lessons past her 15 hrs, and also in Catering as that's the area she's going forward with, though I had to fight tooth and nail for that!
