End of Term Report - Levels/Performance questions again - Sorry!

Hi, I have just received my DD's first year 7 report and am a little baffled on how she is performing. For her Attitude and Behaviour, she has received all "A"s in her subjects and a "B" in her Science. The rest is as follows:
Working at Sub Level (1st mark) - End of YR7 Target (2nd mark)
RE 3a - 5c
Maths 5c - 5b
English 5c - 5c
Science 5c - 5c
French 3c - 4b
Tech 4a - 5c
PE 5b - 5c
History 5b - 5c
Geography 4b - 5c
Music 3b - 5c
Art 4b - 5c
I have been informed that she is "on track", but I was expecting to see some improvement in her English, especially when I was told she was working at a level 5 at English in year 6!
I know she work's hard at school, but her attitude to homework is different. I don't need to push her to do her homework, but I feel that she rushes it, doesn't read it correctly and doesn't digest it!
I've tried helping her, talking to her, but she won't listen. I get the stroppy teenager attitude!
Is she below average, average, working above?
Any advice would be appreciate, as I am now feeling angry, upset and confused over all of this.
Thanks for reading this!

Dont understand why working at and targets are the same. would expect them to be different. from English perspective, a level 5 in primary is different to secondary. for a start the texts used for reading are much more sophisticated and require higher inference and deduction skills. added to that is PEE to answer questions which isn't usually used in primary . there are also 3 separate skills in English. this level is probably an average of all 3.

I wouldn't worry. its only first time and secondary so different that its a lot of adjustment as well as the academic stuff. you should see more level progress over next two terms.

You got a yr7 report? Xmas Envy

We had a similar thing for English in DD1's year 7 report that we got in October. She got a level 5 for all of her SATs in year 6 but only had a target of 5c fof English for the end of year 7 (her current level was assessed as a 5b). I emailed the head of year 7 to query it and her English teacher called me back to discuss it. She said that the target was based on some other tests that DD had done (not CATs or SATs). But she agreed it was too low bearing in mind her current level. She changed it to 6c and I was pleased to see it in writing today on her interim report Grin

I would recommend emailing the school after Christmas if you have any queries.

Her French level is very impressive! I teach French and German and have 6 yr 7 classes (so about 180 students). We have just done an end of term assessment and I graded I think four of them as a L3.

I agree the English end of year target is oddly low, tho as others say to be working at a L5 now is fine because of the different work covered. Our yr 7 report actually says this explicitly.

I think some of the grades are a little confusing ...but I understand they can be in the first term because they are still assessing ...and next term will show a clearer picture...

My dd has exceeded/achieved her year end target in Maths and English but was only awarded 2 for effort (1 being the highest- so I'm not sure whether they are saying that even though she's hit her year end target she can give more?) In PE she was given a 3 (out of 5 grades) for effort yet again has exceeded her year end target....and Music she left year 6 with a 5A and has been estimated has a 4B?....She has a level 7 target for RE and yet only currently graded as 5A..

Not sure about English because my DD was a level 5 when she left Yr 6 but is now working at level 6 (but I do think her previous school got her grading wrong because English has always been strong) ...

These things are always hard my DD got 3 level 1's for effort and 8 level 2's ...so assume she has more to give but her performance levels are high so I feel that she's had a good first term ...she was bullied at her old school so for me knowing she is happy loves going to school and has a good friendship circle is a massive achievement ...

Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm glad it's not just me, who's a little confused over these levels. I sometimes I think I worry too much, but at the end of the day, I want to know that she is performing well and not falling behind.

I will telephone/email the school in the New Year and ask them to explain in more detail, so I have a better understanding.

It's really straightforward …based on information received from primary school they have set targets for the end of year 7so your dd is expected to be working at low level 5s in everything but French level 4 and maths a 5b.

Currently shes working at this level in maths, English and science, they've proably tested in these and her targets will change, to higher ones.

She is a sub level or two below in most others apart from RE but that's normal as primary RE is very hit and miss.

She's doing really well and I would say you have nothing to worry about.

The first report is always random as high school is using primary information. Her summer report will show a better picture.

ILoveAFullFridge · 24/12/2013 09:00

They will adjust the expected levels upwards if she is already attaining them.

EvilTwins · 27/12/2013 19:32

I'm assuming from those targets that her KS2 SAT levels were 4b (and 4a in Maths) The targets assume 2 sub-levels of progress over the course of Yr 7. As ILove says, they will probably adjust the targets.

MANAGER2KIDS · 29/12/2013 08:51

Hi. DD's KS2 SAT levels were all 4a, but I was informed by DD's teacher that she was working at a level 5 for her English. Maths has always been her weakest subject, but she seems to be improving in that area, but not in English, and that's a worry.

That's not how I read your original post she was given a target of 5 c and she's working at that level now after high school have tested them. Her targets will be adjusted up and she'll continue to make progress.
