Is there a book (for parents!) to help with secondary school maths please?

Throughout primary we've used our Usborne Maths dictionary to help with various difficulties with maths homework so I'm wondering if there's something similar for secondary school maths, currently Y7, to explain new terms and concepts to help when DS gets stuck. Can anyone recommend a book please? TIA.

CGP revision guides are good - not sure if there's a year 7 one though.

My DS's Maths teacher gave him a CGP Key Stage Three Maths Revision Guide (Levels 5-8) to help him. Aimed at 11-14 year olds. It helped him a lot. Website is www.cgpbooks.co.uk

Thanks for that quick response. Will get one ordered. Thanks again.

Use BBC Bitesize - its free and goes right up to KS5 for all subjects

Agree with Talkin and would also look at you tube clips - khan academy (there's also some really good science ones when they get onto different types of bonding etc)

Your DS's school probably has a login for the mymaths website which has interactive lessons on every topic. He should ask his maths teacher for the password if he doesn't already know.

We home educate and dd loves the Khan academy website. It's free and the explaining videos are really clear.

There is a fantastic book written for parents by Naomi sani that explains many concepts and how they are taught. It us called something like " how to do maths do your children can too. Brilliant and Naomi is amazing. Worth buying on Amazon.

CGP also does CD-ROMs for Maths. DS1 found the GCSE foundation one quite useful for explanations of Level 6/7 work.

HmmAnOxfordComma · 03/12/2013 22:44

I (and ds) hate the CGP guides - they're a bit 'busy' for us.

We have the Collins level 5-8 one which he used heavily for revision at the end of yr 7. It's thicker and more expensive than the CGP one, though.

BBC Bitesize is good too (although everything he's studied so far in yr 7 and 8 - for all subjects - seems to come under GCSE level, not KS3?) and myMaths is really good.

You could consider the new Common Entrance 13+ Revision book - this is aimed at years 7 and 8. Although it is aimed at Prep schools it does cover all the all the National Curriculum maths for level 5,6 and 7 and has good simple explanations. You can find it on Amazon. It is published by a friend of mine who taught maths for over 20 years - so you ought to recognise his methods!

I often used this with ds1 it covers all the gcse stuff he needed
