Notification of Non-Attendance by Text

School have recently introduced a system whereby parents of those not registered in the morning or notified as absent are sent a text. Just had one about dd who , by the time I rang back, had been identified as there all along. Suspect she may have got delayed by roadworks/traffic on the school bus and either forgot to sign in or expected ds to do so for her. Do they normally send the texts without doing a physical check ?

Normal at our school. There's over 1500 pupils so I think it's inevitable that the odd mistake occurs.

I think the system automatically sends out the txt .I think that in a secondary school to check everyone who was late would take a lot of time for the staff.I would prefer them to spend time on educating my son.
I get txt about Ds15 as he is always on the last minute and gets marked late. I used to ring to check he was actually at school but am a bit more relaxed about it now.

Thanks , just wasn't sure what to expect so I guess it sends before they check. Will be having words with her about making sure she is registered !

I got one about DD1 which made me smile a bit as it had been tipping with rain and it was one of the few times I dropped her off so unless she got lost crossing the road...

Can imagine it would be quite worrying though if you got that text at work.

yes fortunately I was at home today.

Ds1 was late on Monday, but I didn't get a text. He did go in via the school office though so was presumably registered? All trains were cancelled so I guess a few children affected. A bit worrying though if your child is at school all along. Did they not text to say "oops, we've found her?"

LIZS · 06/11/2013 14:08

I rang about 10 minutes after receiving the text and they just said she was there after all ! I don't know if they would otherwise have let me know. Morning buses have been running very late this week from our direction due to a road closure and congestion backing up around M25 junction .

Its easier and quicker to send the texts automatically. Better that way rather than double checking and sending out texts much later in the morning. I know it can be a pain if staff have completed registers incorrectly but better to send it out early just in case something has happened to the student on route to school.
