What time do they leave and how complicated is it? Wondering what is reasonable/doable every day. Looking at schools (dd in yr 5) and wondering how far out to look.

DD gets the bus at 7.30am. It either gets to school between 8-8.15am depending on traffic.

School starts at 8.30am and she's doing clubs after school most days so i pick her up and she's home by 6-6.15pm.

She's found this first half term exhausting (not a morning person at the best of times) and i just hope it gets better.

cq · 14/10/2013 23:00

DS travels 50 mins each way on the school bus. Hates it. Constantly whinges about moving closer to school. Loves his school though thankfully, he knows it's a great school and he's lucky to be there.

He leaves the house at 7.25 a/m. and gets home around 6.20 p.m. - then has homework.

Tommy · 14/10/2013 23:01

DS1 gets a bus at 8.10 which gets him to school at about 8.35. It's a designated school bus and the stop is about 10 mins walk from our house.
He manages it fine. In fact, it's a later start than breakfast club when he was at primary school ( 7 mins walk)

Sparklingbrook · 14/10/2013 23:03

I drive DS1 6 miles to the school bus stop, we leave at 7,50am, the coach leaves at 8.10am. The school bus drives him the next 6 miles to school.

He gets back home about 4.40pm.

DS gets up about 8 gets dressed about 8.30 leaves here at 8.38 gets there at 8.39.

NoComet · 14/10/2013 23:11

6 miles and -15 minutes by car
One hour and heaven knows how many miles by their crazy, council provided bus.

Nearest in county school and nearest by shortest route (lane I refuse to drive down and coach would get stuck)

There is another over the boarder about the same distance, but no bus.

NoComet · 14/10/2013 23:12

As you can guess bus is not popular and I do end up picking them up sometimes.

Lubiloo · 14/10/2013 23:14

Dd leaves house at 7:45 to catch the coach and comes home by 5:15pm.

DismemberedDwerf · 14/10/2013 23:15

A 40 minute walk. To be fair, on the bus it's twice the distance and the same amount of time. And walking is healthy, right?

BackforGood · 14/10/2013 23:20

Mine all walk.
dd1 (she looked on google maps and measured it Grin) walks 1.8miles to school because she goes via her friends' houses rather than in a direct straight line. She leaves at 7.30 each day - registration starts at 8.30

dd1 - goes to same school but her friends don't live in such a wiggly line Wink She leaves at 7.40 each day. It's a 1.5mile walk on the days they go the way I drive.

ds (He's in the Upper 6th) leaves later than he should, through trying to cream an extra time in bed. Recently he cycles a lot as that's quicker when you don't get u until after you should have started walking. His school is 1.1 miles away - he reckons he's not late when he leaves 5mins before, but I have my doubts.

ChippyMinton · 14/10/2013 23:32

Couple of minutes walk to the bus stop, 35 minutes journey, 7-8 minutes walk to school. Leaves home 7.30 for 8.35 start. School's out at 3.05, he gets home just after 4pm.

LittleRobots · 14/10/2013 23:41

About 10 minutes at slow child walk.

bruffin · 14/10/2013 23:51

20 minute walk to station, 8 minutes on train, then 10 minute walk other end. To get to school on time they have to leave 7.50 but dd usually goes 7.20.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 15/10/2013 00:07

They leave about 7.45 to catch a bus that leaves just before 8am (beginning of route so pretty much always runs to a schedule) They get to school around 8.20, so plenty of time before registration at 8.30. If they do miss the bus they can still walk it by 8.30 as long as they don't dawdle (bus takes a more circuitous route than they walk)

bigTillyMint · 15/10/2013 06:35

If they catch the bus(es), they leave about 7.45/55 and bus hop the 3 miles to school to arrive (I hope) by 8.40
However, DS always and DD fairly often cycle - leaving at 8.15 and arriving about 8.30.

If they come straight home (no ASC) then cycling they are back by 3.40, bussing any time between 3.55 and 4.30Confused

Picturesinthefirelight · 15/10/2013 06:41

Dd gets up at 6.30 & leaves at 7.15am (except Mondays when dh who takes her has to leave at 7am)

She usually arrives around 8.30am with school starting at 8.55am

However she doesn't finish until 6pm, do has her dinner at school leaving at 6.30pm & arriving hone around 7.45pm

MrsDavidBowie · 15/10/2013 06:42

Mine have a ten minute walk, so leave about 8.15.
Ds is home by 3.15, dd normally stays at school till about 5.

curlew · 15/10/2013 06:47

We live in the back of beyond. We are a 20 minute walk to the station, (but I usually drive her!) then dd has a 20 minute train ride and another 15 minute walk to school.

There isn't a suitable train for ds, so I drive him- 15 minutes.

It's an utter pain in the neck. We love where we live, but in my next life, I am going to live next door to a school.....

Bonsoir · 15/10/2013 06:51

The older I get, the less I am inclined to favour any sort of commute. 20 mins by bus is my threshold for DCs' journey to school. I would prefer 5 minutes on foot.

TantrumsAndBalloons · 15/10/2013 06:51

10 minute walk to the station
13 minute train journey
15 minute walk to school.

Dd leaves at 7.30 because she meets her friends.
Ds1 leaves at 7.50.

onadifferentplanet · 15/10/2013 06:54

DSs leave the house at 7.35,half mile walk to station, ten minutes on train, DS1 walks half a mile at the other end, DS2 a mile. they get home at 5.00 unless they have something on after school . Trains every half hour so not much hanging around if they finish later.

chickydoo · 15/10/2013 06:57

DD 1 walks to college takes her an hour each way. She does this to save her bus fare up, so she ends up with more cash in her pocket.
DS 2 and 3 Leave the house at 7.10 get the bus at 7.20. Then 1 hour on the bus. ( school is only really 15 -20 mins away, but the bus goes all around the houses to get there)
DS4 is driven by me on my way to work, his school is 4-5 mins in the car.
They all come home at different times depending on what they are up to.

JGBMum · 15/10/2013 07:01

Leaves 8.10 to meet friends and walk to bus stop for school bus which leaves at 8.30. Gets to school for 8.45
We only live about 2 miles from the school, but it's a funny walk, deserted lanes, dual carriage way and a park to cross, so we pay for dd to get the school bus instead.
Coming home, bus leaves at 3-40, dd home at 4.(unless she has after school clubs)

HSMMaCM · 15/10/2013 07:13

DD gets up at 7, to catch the bus at 7.45, 10 miles. She walks back through the door at 4.
