Any recommendations for a Independent Secondary School for a Sporty/Academic Girl in the Surrey/Sussex/Kent and South London Areas.

Thanks

What sport ? If she is, say, a hockey player that might narrow it down a bit ! Sevenoaks maybe ?

Ladymuck · 10/10/2013 18:47

That's quite a wide area too! Is she committed to clubs as well, or would she be willing to give up everything to play for the school? Does she (or you) favour single sex or co-ed?

Thanks for the replies. It is a large area as we are prepared to travel to the right school. Looking for a co-ed or girls Whitgift!

You may be prepared to travel, but are you prepared to moveGrin? Your dd will not have the best experience if she is spending more than 2 hours a day in travel IMO.

Guildford High would probably be at the top of my list, esp for all girls. St Catherines is academic and has a lot going on.

I think that most of the co-eds are certainly reasonable at sport, perhaps attracting a more robust girl? Brighton College, Sevenoaks, Caterham and Reigate Grammar have something to offer sporty girls I think, though if your dd has a preference for a certain sport, then you need to look more specifically at what the schools do - not all do hockey for example.

In terms of expectations: Whitgift has 200 boys in a yeargroup, which does allow them to have resources to offer a huge range of individual sports to a very high level. Few girls schools seem to have over 100 girls in a year group, so it will be very hard to find a Whitgift type environment. Perhaps it is why the co-eds come to mind - they do tend to be larger and to have a high level of sports facilities which can be used by all of their pupils.

Bedes in Hailsham, Sussex. Co-ed, 40% boarding. Outstanding sports facilities. Loads of sports scholarships.
Hurstpierpoint, Sussex. Co-ed, not sure on boarding numbers but used to be about the same as Bedes a few years ago.
Roedean, Brighton, Sussex. Girls, predominantly boarding. More academic, great facilities
St Leonard- Mayfield, Sussex. RC Girls, boarding/day. My DD told me they have a fab swimming pool!
Brighton, Sussex. Co-ed. Day/ boarding. V academic, work hard, play hard attitude required.
Lancing, Sussex. Co-ed 60% boarding. Classic public school. Strong sport ethos.

My DC are both sporty and these were the schools we considered &/or chose. Most private schools are strong on sport and dedicate at least one afternoon a week to it.
