Just that really. Are there standard levels for different subjects or is it up to different schools to decide if a child should sit at the end of year 10? Thanks.

Schools decide. Early entry used to be unusual and mostly used for gifted and talented who could get A/A grades before the end of Y11, and start an A' Level or bridging course. In recent years, it's become increasingly popular with schools chasing A-C grades for the league tables and wanting to put their students in for resits. In the last week or two, Gove has tried to reduce the practice by making the first attempt count in league tables. It's effective immediately but students who have already taken the GCSE can still count best grade and there are loopholes. Essentially though, there is less incentive for schools to go for early entry.
