Year 7 Renaissance Accelerated Reading Plan. How do your children get on with it?

DS has been accessed for this and given a reading level. His teacher has told him he has to chose books on the Renaissance plan to gain points on the system. Thing is DS doesn't want to read any of them. The list for his level (12) seems to be comprised of classic novels, mostly Dickens, which I think most 11 year olds would turn there nose up at.

DS has always read at home, we are a family of readers and he always has his head in a book. He has had reading tests at primary school and has an adults ability to decode. I am worried this scheme is going to destroy his love of reading.

PS. I enjoy reading Dickens, but I came to him when I was a bit older, doubt I would have liked him at 11 and I hated reading Jane Austen at school!

He should have been given a range to read, not just ones at his highest level, eg 5.9 - 12.5. There are plenty of good books in that range!

Perhaps he's misunderstood then. He didn't write any details down in his planner. Thanks
