Child with a statement being forced to go to a particular school

Hello,
My son has a statement, he is physically fine but is a slow learner partly because he was a naughty child for many years. He has a case officer at surrey council who has said that he can only go to Park school, a school where children with severe learning difficulties go to ie mental issues. He went to the induction day, came home very upset because there was noone he could run around with at break.

I have found him a secondary school that would like to take him ( he should be in a secondary school this week) but the case officer has said that legally we have to go through her because he has a statement. I cant find any information on the net about this. Is this really the case? Also on one of his review documents with the case officer for the statement it states that my son has an eye infection. My daughter had one at the time too and it cleared up as these things do, so I dont understand why this was brought up as an issue.
Also it claimed he was slow writing with his right hand, my son is left handed!!! There are numerous things like this.
When I raised these indiscrepencies recently she told me that she cannot discuss this now as I had the oppurtunity at the time. I had a serious illness at the time and I coudnt pay attention even though i tried my best!

Any advice pleaaaaaase?

If you report this thread and get it moved to special needs, there are lots of lovely people who know all about this.

They don't all read the rest of MN

And good luck

You might have more luck on the special needs talk board, there are loads of people who know a lots of stuff about statements. It doesn't sound right though if you've found a school happy to take him!

Sorry, cross post!

Hi, has he started at school? Ask for an early annual review immediately. Was he at mainstream primary? You have a Lot of Rights as a parent. Excuse random caps. Is it a final statement? Issued in last two months? Appeal. (Google sendist). Need more background to how he got here and what choices and processes happened.

I thought a statement normally states the school a child will go to at secondary transfer but it is agreed with the parents. Normally social services ( is this the case officer?) has an input but do not choose the school as it is an educational matter. What meetings did u have to agree his secondary transfer? An educational psychologist must have been involved and maybe health professionals too. If a secondary school will take him, then I think you can send him there but make absolutely sure they have seen the statement and can meet his needs. These will be detailed on the statement as well as how his needs should be met by the school he goes to. If the statement has been agreed by you with a school on it you do not want, you will need to get the statement changed. Speak to Surrey Parent Partnrship about how to do this. Also speak to his new school urgently.

He has to go to the school named on the statement. This can be changed but there are processes to follow. Either ring parent partnership or ipsea to talk about your case. The statement should have been changed back in February so how long have you known ?
