DS1 going into Year 10 on Thursday. Tried his blazer on today that fitted fine the day they broke up. It is far too small now, the sleeves especially-about two inches short. Shock

Luckily we had the next size up due to buying the wrong size last year. But I am astounded.

Oh dear god in heaven at the idea of sports direct. I refused to go in there in the end. Gave dd some money and let her get on with it

She always grew like a weed in the summer holidays. The one year I was organised and bought all her new uniform in July I had to take it all back in the hell of early September because it didn't fit.

Sparklingbrook · 04/09/2013 08:28

Oh no Sports Direct-my least favourite shop ever.

I bought new skirts the next size up (without telling my daughter). Asked her to try them on the other day to make sure they fitted and she looked straight at the extra 2cm length and asked if they were new as they were too big. The compromise is she wears them just this half term.

LeGavrOrf · 04/09/2013 08:35

I had the same gym skirt from year 7 to year 11.

It looked like a kilt at first and was around my knees and had to be pinned to stay up, by the end of school it was on its last button and an indecently short length.

Soditall · 04/09/2013 08:35

My 11 year old has done exactly the same thing.

He's started secondary school today and I'm really hoping people realize he's one of the little one's and don't expect him to know where's he's going as he's had a huge growth spurt over the summer holidays and now looks about 14 Confused

He's now as tall as me and I'm 5ft 6

SoupDragon · 04/09/2013 09:18

DS2 has permission to rugby tackle me to the floor if I ever try to set foot in Sports Direct again.

soaccidentprone · 04/09/2013 09:31

Ds2(11)started secondary school yesterday.

When he put a 'proper' shirt on he made noises like he was going to choke to death as he's used to wearing polo shirts.

I measure and he is a 29 inch chest. The school shop advised getting his blazer a bit big, so he's got a 33 inch chest and the sleeves turned up underneath a bit.

He's only 4 foot 11, but I swear he has grown 5 or 6 inches over the holidays, fueled by suddenly sleeping and eating like a teenager. Having to get up at 6.45 yesterday was a complete killer for him (and me) Grin

And for the first time ever I got to work before my manager.

He also tried on his brand new, never been worn pe trainers yesterday, and despite buying them a size too big, he said they were too small. I bought a 6 when he was just going into a 5. Fortunately I have some size 7 trainers which he can have, which I've only worn 1/2 a dozen times or so.

I am feeling very old. And my roots need doing.

I have a ds1 who is supposed to start college next week (not that he has decided yet!), And ds2 who is at secondary school.

mistlethrush · 04/09/2013 09:40

I also had the same gym skirt - but from Yr 6 to Yr 13. I carried on using the sports jumper (wool) that I got in Yr5 for horse riding until I left university. I didn't stay the same size I hasten to add.

I found I needed to hem blazer sleeves up yesterday morning as, having bought the only available blazer in the 2nd hand shop that was remotely the right size, its still too big (shock horror!) and the sleeves just emphasised it.

Its the shoes that scare me as he's just gone into a size 4 (size 5 rugby boots) at aged 8.

Here is a transcript of an exchange between DS2 (12) and myself:

Last night...
Me: Do you have an ironed shirt for tomorrow?
DS2: Yes

This morning, 5 mins before departure
Me: DS2, do you remember that conversation we had last night about having an ironed shirt?
DS2: Looks shifty and rather crumpled
Me: So why does that shirt look like it has spent the summer holidays screwed up in a ball on your bedroom floor?
DS2: Looks shifty

Sports Direct - the eighth circle of hell.

DD and I off into town to find school shoes. How did I let this happen? Old ones still fitted perfectly at end of term. Wish us luck Hmm

cq · 04/09/2013 09:56

Ha, x-post Soup - my DS did the same - offered me a screwed up shirt and trousers that have festered all summer in his bag. Boak.

basildonbond · 04/09/2013 10:18

There is a reward on offer for whoever can find ds's school tie ... I remember washing it back in July and since then it's somehow disappeared Hmm

WildThongsHeartString · 04/09/2013 10:23

Bloody children and all that growing...

SoupDragon · 04/09/2013 10:25

The tie is in the Floordrobe, probably. We have 4 potential school ties for DS2 now and could only find the one I'd just taken DS1's name tag off. FFS.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/09/2013 13:19

Managed to usher dd out of the door fully dressed this morning Shock

hardboiled · 04/09/2013 15:51

I found I needed to hem blazer sleeves up yesterday morning

Instructions please... Blush Do you hem them up at the wrist or at the shoulder. Wrist looks horribly bulky to me!

NoComet · 05/09/2013 12:55

DDs best friend got her blazer at the beginning of the Y6/Y7 holidays. It had to go back, her arms grew so much over the summer.

soaccidentprone · 05/09/2013 18:52

You need to fold the wrists up inside and then do a few loose stitches just to catch the hem in place.

RantyMcRantpants · 05/09/2013 19:29

We had the same problem with my DC1. I had to buy him new school shoes and trainers 3 weeks before the end of term, plus ordinary shoes. Come the summer holidays I had to kit him out clothes wise and shoe wise again as he had grown again and then we've had to do go shopping again as clothes and shoes are not fitting him. He's gone from a size 6 shoe to a size 9 in three months and from age 11 clothes to age 14/15 to small man's. Had to get him 30" waist in shorts and trousers (though I do admit he measures a 29" and I've bought him a size up as I'm fed up of buying new clothes.)

I am so glad I didn't buy him new school clothes at the end of term. I've just gone to the schools second hand shop and bought the minimum we can get away with for the moment.

As for my other two well... least said and all that. Thankfully we can get away with hand me downs with them a lot. Though shoes are always bought new.

WorrySighWorrySigh · 06/09/2013 22:06

I am so glad that DS is now in proper man shoes. It happened last year when he could finally leave behind children's flimsy shoes. He is now in shoes which can actually withstand the walk to school for longer than a week.
